John Gurney

This is more than a year before any other published reference I've found.

According to the Lampoon's Table of Contents, A Guide to Safe Sex is by Andy Simmons and Dave Hansen and illustrated by John Gurney and Alan Kupferberg.

Yes, I was a staffer there.

I had worshipped the lampoon growing up.

Eggplants, all kinds of different baggies full of chicken.

The front of this satirical pamphlet is illustrated like an old Marlboro cigarette advertisement with a nondescript cowboy on horseback at dusk herding animals on a ranch in Monument Valley.

It's not until I call the illustrator of this page, John Gurney, that I realize what this smoking cowboy is herding.

Okay, yeah, yeah, that's a lot of gerbils in here.
