John Dowland

More than 400 years before sad songs filled our playlists, John Dowland made melancholy his musical trademark.

Born in England around 1563, Dowland became one of the greatest composers and lutenists of the Elizabethan Age.

His specialty was the lute song, an intimate form combining a solo voice with the delicate sound of the lute.

Some say he hid messages within his compositions for covert believers.

John Dowland later produced lute songs that captured melancholy yet celebrated courtly love, reminders that even the king's magnificence had its shadow.

Henry's personal traits, his drive to appear larger than life, his paranoia over succession, and a craving for wealth shaped all of these cultural investments.

He was known as The Great, not just for policy, but because he built monuments, wrote ballads, and had himself painted as if he were divine.
