We're going to celebrate the centenary of John Coltrane, one of the greatest saxophonists, and band leaders, and composers of the 20th century.

Well, speaking of some of the best people in Philadelphia, one Philadelphian is being honored.

I'm talking about John Coltrane.

Nice.

Jazz legend.

That goes from 7 to 9 p.m. And because we're talking about Coltrane, of course, it's going to be live performances.

That's this outdoor venue next to John Coltrane's former house.

Yeah, it's like an abandoned

But in this piece specifically, she references this Russian musical prodigy named Nicholas Slonimski, and he wrote a book in the 1940s all about creating musical patterns that, quote, "...hook the mind and force mimicry and repetition." And I don't know if he's exactly talking about earworms here, but he is talking about catchy music.

And Frank Zappa and John Coltrane, among others, were influenced by Slonimski's work.

So the term earworm then gets coined back in the 1970s, and this happens in Germany.

But even that has some old roots.

It was worth working through the complexities of the issue, including Chappelle's right to free expression, how his material was landing with some of the people he was talking about, Netflix's right to platform him, and my friend's rights to protest.

At the time, I noted that there were, quote, shocking, even offensive moments, but I've also been shocked by works of art by Goya and Coltrane.

That's what I said.

That comment... was met with a lot of pushback.

Yeah.

And I was listening recently to John Coltrane's Giant Steps album, and he dominates the entire album.

And God bless the ones who are trying to keep up with him.

They're supportive, but the emphasis is on the soloist.
