It's dreadful.
Nick HarePANELIST
5:58
Uh, so John Carmack, who was, who was a, a, uh, guy who worked at Oculus before Facebook acquired it, he said, "We've got a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort.
Nick HarePANELIST
6:09
There's no way to sugarcoat it.
Nick HarePANELIST

I think our organization is operating at half the effectiveness that would make me happy.

Um, it was a documentary, um, about John Carmack and John Romero.
Madison McIlwainHOST

I mean, that's, th- there's barely any story in Quake.

But at some point pretty quickly, unless you are John Carmack or Ilya Sutskever, you are like not going to be able to continue to double your impact all the way through eight, nine or ten.
Mike VernalGUEST
28:56
And so at that point, the way you have to think about doubling your impact is basically how do you make the people around you more effective? And there are a few ways of doing that.
Mike VernalGUEST
29:06
One is actually like building tools that the rest of the engineering team can use for each of them to become more effective.
DeucyHOST
7:56
is safe like what were what were some of the ones that came out recently that critical acclaim sold tons of copies and then you still hear about the labs
DonnieHOST
8:04
here's the one that really really irritated the hell out of me was they gutted id id software the most iconic legendary developer and i'd say They're up there with the Nintendos and some of the other developers we could probably make examples of, but they did so much for gaming when they started in the early 90s with John Carmack and John Romero and the whole team they did there, right? So they apparently gutted more than half the team there.
DonnieHOST
8:30
Their team now is apparently smaller than what they started Doom 2016 with.
DonnieHOST
8:35
And all three Doom games critically acclaimed, sold pretty well.
