John Candy: I Like Me

I typically get pretty teary with documentaries.

Like, I just recently watched the I Like Me John Candy documentary, and that made me a bit weepy.

And the Martin Short one...

Maybe a bit weepy.

Mm-hmm

... uh, I Like Me, and it was gonna be on Amazon three days after our book comes out.

And you might think that's, like, bad timing, but I think it's the best timing.

Mm.

And when you realize that, the two families would vacation together and they, they're both from like, uh, you know, uh, Hughes is from Chicago where he's a hockey fan and they have snowy winters, and s- John of course is from Toronto where they have snowy winters and hockey, and they had a lot in common beyond that, and then they both moved to Brentwood around the same time.

And so they were both adjusting to sort of being outsiders in Hollywood, but they were both at the peak of their careers.

So when he wrote Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Hughes, he really understood who John Candy was as the lead, and he kind of put- A lot of truth into it, and there's that great speech, the, uh, what we call the "I Like Me" scene, where John- John charac- his character Del Griffith finally, uh, erupts at Steve Martin and says-

Yeah

He smoked and drank a lot.

Have you watched the I Like Me documentary?

Nah, if I watch it, then I'm going to have to take stock of my own life a little bit.

That's kind of what it is.
