So to nurture our becoming what we are, so that you could say the same thing, mutatis mutandis, applies to the marks of the church, including the mark unity, which on the one hand, the church is intrinsically one.

What is a patron saint that we need in this moment in our church to build communion?

I wonder if you could just walk us through the general overview of the amount of work that went into it.

Sure.

It began with a study that the McGrath Institute for Church Life commissioned from CARA, Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, on how seminaries and dioceses assess seminarians' suitability for ordination.

And this survey was supervised by and developed with the help of Father Tom Berg, who is visiting right now, visiting associate professor at the McGrath Institute for Church Life.

So they worked on the development of the instrument and then carried to the survey and it came up with a lot of data that we then considered by convening a group over four days of seminary rectors, seminary formators, one bishop, psychological personnel, et cetera, to work through the results of the CARA research and to come up with recommendations based on it, but also based on the practical experience of everyone in the room, the shared practical experience.

And in the end, the two authors of the report, Father Tom Berg and Dr. Locke, who wrote the report, reflected the judgment of the group, but also their own prudential judgment in putting it together.

And then on the other hand, might have someone who perhaps has a more sectarian view of the church as you're describing who says in order for the church to be truly conformed to christ and not to the world we really have to draw hard boundaries and we have to kind of exclude people who would identify as lgbt plus or maybe who are gender non-conforming so how would you respond to those two perspectives well

um With regard to the first one, to say the church has to change X in order to be more welcoming, there's really no end to that.

The church, in order to be more welcoming, should stop preaching Jesus.

I mean, in order to be more welcoming to Muslims, or in order to be more welcoming to Jews, The church should stop preaching Jesus, or should make it optional, or should turn Jesus into a symbol of union with God, so that you basically have ended up with a church that has lost any sense that it's anything but a sociological grouping.

The Church is here for the sake of the world.

The Church is here for the sake of the salvation of the world.

That's the work of love that the Church does in the world, for the world, towards the world.

She is overflowing with love because of the love she's been given.
