Joe Washington

Didn't you just describe Switzer's tenure? I mean, you always had great defenses.

Yes, you had great players like Billy Sims and Joe Washington and, I mean, obviously a plethora of probably 20 Hall of Famers when it's all said and done.

But this program has won seven national championships, and I would argue that all seven were led by the defense.

Yeah, every year OU's won the national championship, they've had an elite defense.

couldn't

come within 4.6 inches of Joe Washington in his career or Greg Pruitt or Adrian Peterson.

I mean, this is just an embarrassment of these stats.

It's almost like I don't want to even read them anymore.

They set Ricky Young back.

The other back across the way is Joe Washington.

Young man from Oklahoma.

Quick pass out to Washington over there.

Dwight McDonald comes wide here to the left side.

Eddie Payton in the slot.

Joe Washington, now he shifts back along with Harris and Bo Matthews.

James Harris back into the pocket to throw.

stuff means something it does some

degree the tradition and what it always will but like But you know what's going to happen is one day you're going to sit there and, you know, like we've grown up seeing videos of, you know, Joe Washington and Billy Sims and Barry Switzer.

You know what's funny? I was showing my wife last

night.

He's side to side.

He reminds me of Joe Washington a little.

At the 13.

Here's a delay to Fuller.

We had, we'd run what was called rocket screen against the Raiders earlier that year.

And Joe Washington went for 90 yards.

Wow.

And we won that game 33, 31, something like that.

A friend asked me via text, "Steely, give me your favorite all-time OU football player, basketball player, baseball player, and an athlete from another sport." Hmm.

Well, football, it's, uh, it's little Joe Washington.

Joe Washington for me in football.

Wayman in basketball.

I got to cover and interview Wayman a ton when he was at OU, and, uh, just a great dude, great charisma, great smile.

He was always, uh, just a tremendous interview.

Um, so I'd go with, uh, Joe Washington again in football, Wayman in basketball.

Baseball would be a tie between Bobby Witt and, uh, Steve Peters.

the field, on the field.

Uh, you got Joe Washington, who was what looks to be a Chargers running back in 1976.

Never heard of him.

So yeah, he was a real electric Eric Metcalf type guy, you know?
