If you would, just where you sit now, just reflect on the state of these kind of partnerships or this type of coordination across many different agencies.

Joe TylerGUEST
So when I became the director here at CAL FIRE, one of my first tasks was to join the task force.

Joe TylerGUEST
Things that I thought all the partners agreed upon, all the things that the partners knew, that I learned quickly that this was a very informative and educational opportunity.

Joe TylerGUEST
And then I got to the point in the task force that I thought, just to be blunt, we're doing a lot of talking, but let's see the action.

Wade CrowfootHOST
Can you talk about why that's important to you and where we've come on that issue?

Now, at the same time, we have to make sure that our employees, all of our employees understand cultural awareness, that they understand that there are so many people out there that have so much to offer, that we have Native American tribes who have this traditional ecological knowledge, who know how to steward the land and we could learn from them.

Joe TylerGUEST
So what does that mean? That means that as part of legislation, Senate Bill 310, which is a cultural burning agreement between a Native American tribe and the California Natural Resources Agency, but CAL FIRE is well involved in that process, for our tribal members to be able to, as directed by their tribal council, be certified burners to allow that knowledge to be put on the landscape And I think that it's working.

Joe TylerGUEST
So far, the Karuk tribe in the north half of the state is the one tribe with a cultural burning agreement.

What are some of the things that we need to do moving forward? Are we meeting our mark? That kind of thing.
