Joe Slovo

Those that revered Sobukwe and, and, and, and all of the other, uh, fighters against, uh, apartheid.

Joe Slovo would say the same thing.

My question to you is, what label would satisfy your understanding of the, of the sheer magnitude of these individuals? I'd be interested to take those calls, 011-883-0702.

And then, um, ja, it appears that there's another march being play- planned, what, uh, end of, of September.

And I heard people chanting this slogan, it's a black thing you wouldn't understand, which was really a very, very stupid slogan to protest as part of the anti-apartheid movement, given that the anti-apartheid movement was very explicitly multiracial.

In fact, the head of the ANZ's military wing at that time, Joe Slovo was a white man, a Jewish white man.

So it was a kind of direct misunderstanding or even repudiation of the principles of the ANC itself to say this, right? But these things happen in protest.

And it's really kind of bad faith actors who I think take these things and say, this is the essence of a movement, rather than trying to look at it in context.

So I did what I like to do.

I dug into one of the names she cites in the introduction, precisely Joe Slovo.

And Hajar, I know you will appreciate this because I get to bring a female figure here too.

Yeah, that's good.

But she eventually went into exile and later became director of the Center for African Studies in Mozambique.

And in 1982, she was assassinated in Mozambique by a parcel bomb sent by South African security operatives.

And one interesting complication here is that the bomb may originally have been intended for Joe Slovo, her husband.

And you said Joe Slovo was part of the ANC, right?

And we're not doing that.

In fact, the apartheid, it's like the government's housing policy, the ANC's housing policy, which was initially called started by Joe Slovo, who went to the banks when the ANC came to power, and got them to support his policy of one house, one family.

All they did was copy the apartheid government's policy of building a house on a piece of ground.

But not every family wants to live that way.

Of course, once I was in the ANC, there were all these extraordinary white activists, Joe Slovo and various others, who I got to know, who I loved being around.

But I was most comfortable in townships amongst Black comrades.

Um, I want to talk about your new book, Making a Killing-

I listened with long ears.

Um, he came back and he sat down and he said, "Something wonderful just now happened." We said, "What?" He said, "No, that was Joe Slovo who called.

The ANC NEC has just agreed to a government of national unity for five years." And he was very excited about that at the time.

I was, I'm a bit of, more cynical perhaps, and, um, so when we left and we got to the door and I said goodbye to Roelf, I said, "You know, Mr. Meyer, my youngest daughter was born five days ago.
