YanHOST
23:14
There will be freaking, you know, probably primarily Wynn Stanley and stuff.
YanHOST
23:19
And I don't know how much Joe Shields does in negotiations.
YanHOST
23:23
I think it will be Wynn Stanley, Bedadig Barley, and Xabi Alonso trying to get this done.
YanHOST
23:27
Those three.
Graeme BaileyHOST
38:01
Obviously, Laurence Stanley i- i- is moving on.
Graeme BaileyHOST
38:04
Joe Shields, um, moving up to work towards Sporting Director, so interesting off the field.
Graeme BaileyHOST
38:08
I, I think Chelsea, this defense, Craig, I think that-
Craig HoneymanHOST
38:12
Laurence Stewart
PysHOST
72:17
But yeah, I mean, I guess we just talk about from the future and what I know will be happening going further forward.
PysHOST
72:24
Joe Shields and Sam Jewell, obviously two of the other sporting directors, have been now given more power and responsibility in terms of squad building, in terms of player recruitment, while Paul Wynn-Stanley will be doing contract side of things he'll be doing transfer negotiations also some stuff to do like the medical department overseeing that type of thing but yeah I mean when you're talking about I guess because mainly fans will want to know who's doing our transfers who do we need to blame when stuff goes wrong from what I know it'll be Joe Shields and Sam Joel they've been given the more responsibility and power in terms of squad building.
PysHOST
73:02
Not Winstanley? No, not Winstanley.
PysHOST
73:05
No, he's going to be more transfer, like negotiation side of things, not identifying players.
PysHOST
73:10
That will be more Sam Jewell, Joe Shields and obviously Jaby Alonso, I guess.
LaurenzHOST
73:15
Yeah.
LaurenzHOST
73:16
And I mean, we had, I'm not saying disagreement is the wrong word, but a slight, I guess, different assessment maybe potentially from what this not necessarily means, but slightly maybe, because one of the things that was said that Laurence Stewart was doing was, I can't remember if you said it now, but essentially being in charge of the direction of of play style that the club is taking and I think even if he is not or was not the individual choosing the transfer targets being the individual to choose the play style direction the play style that as a club you are deciding to go down will of course in my opinion quite dramatically impact the types of players you're going to try to sign the types of players you're going to make your transfer targets and I think taking a person that made those decisions out of it without replacing them even if other people are getting slightly more responsibilities I think this also puts more of that to the manager in my opinion because it never or what it says is that Stewart and Javier Alonso had slightly different views and therefore that wouldn't have worked long term if it's still that guy you know choosing the long term kind of direction of play um while the manager is maybe trying to look at something different.
PysHOST
77:24
We have to go off basically just what's said.
Graeme BaileyHOST
38:01
Obviously, Laurence Stanley is moving on.
Graeme BaileyHOST
38:04
Joe Shields moving up to work towards a smart indictment.
Graeme BaileyHOST
38:07
Also interesting off the field.
Graeme BaileyHOST
38:09
I think Chelsea, this defence...
YanHOST
10:33
Hopefully.
YanHOST
10:34
Uh, Winstanley's role has somewhat changed into more transfer negotiations, uh, contracts, and player liaison, along with Joe Shields, and he'll be responsible for getting transfer deals over the line.
YanHOST
10:46
Joe Shields getting on the blower, on the phone to, uh, any man who's played for Manchester City at some point.
YanHOST
10:51
And maybe due to what's happening at the moment, players that are currently playing for Man City.
YanHOST
10:56
Elliot Anderson, we could do with you.
Daniel ChildsHOST
2:12
Whether that's true or not, Lawrence Stewart's leaving Chelsea and his legacy is not a positive one anywhere close to it.
Daniel ChildsHOST
2:20
Now, the problem with Chelsea's recruitment structure is obviously because there are so many names, Winston Stanley, Sam Jewell, Joe Shields, and other people involved in Chelsea who maybe aren't as prominent that we don't think about.
Daniel ChildsHOST
2:31
I mean, Benedict Barley himself has been involved at times throughout the years in transfer negotiations.
Daniel ChildsHOST
2:36
And of course, the influence of the head coaches, however strong or not they were over the period of Klilek's ownership.
Daniel ChildsHOST
2:58
I think that's the problem, right? Is that everyone has shared responsibility, but at times it's been difficult to decipher who is responsible for what.
Daniel ChildsHOST
3:05
Now, what has been reported, not only just yesterday in terms of Stewart leaving and what that leaves and how the new structure is going to look, because there isn't going to be a direct replacement for him, apparently.
Daniel ChildsHOST
3:16
When Stanley apparently now will work with Sam Jewel and Joe Shields, they'll work with Xabi Alonso and the club's data and analytics department.
Daniel ChildsHOST
3:24
Dave Fallows, of course, who joined last year, is part of the leadership team, but he does not have a set portfolio or works kind of in more of an advisory and consultancy role.
Liam TwomeyPANELIST
4:53
Not necessarily a shock that Laurence Stewart is leaving, just because I think having conversations around Chelsea over the last year or two, yes, a lot has been made of the five sporting directors, as it was, but The ones that you would generally hear about when you were talking to people around Chelsea would be Paul Winstanley, who has always been the sporting director that has the most to do with transfer and contract negotiations.
Liam TwomeyPANELIST
5:26
And Joe Shields, who of course has his fingerprints on a lot of the club's recruitment and is in charge of player and academy pathways.
Liam TwomeyPANELIST
5:37
And Sam Jewell is also involved as more of a background figure on the recruitment side as well.
Liam TwomeyPANELIST
5:45
So Stewart, I think, was...
YanHOST
5:50
Stewart agreed to join Chelsea back in 2022, initially as technical director and was made co-sporting director alongside Paul Winstanley, who will now work day-to-day basis with Sam Jewell.
YanHOST
6:04
And Joe Shields.
YanHOST
6:05
Now, you always saw both, um, Stewart and Winstanley walking either side of Bedanag Bali.
YanHOST
6:11
Uh, they're like his goons almost, do you know what I mean? Um, I don't know much about Sam Jewell.
YanHOST
6:16
Didn't he come from Swansea? I can't even remember.
YanHOST
6:18
Joe Shields, I don't think we would get rid of, 'cause he's like our link into farming Man City Academy players or ex-Man City players, of which we've had so many.
YanHOST
6:29
Should we try and think of them? Let's do the good ones first.
YanHOST
6:32
Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Romeo Lavia, who's had an excellent international break.
George BensonHOST
2:22
If we go through a little bit more of this headline here from Ben Jacobs, "Amicable exit that was decided in the last few weeks following talks between Stewart and Behdad Eghbali," who is obviously now that Todd Boehly is no longer involved at Chelsea, Behdad Eghbali is the man.
George BensonHOST
2:39
Paul Winstanley, Sam Jewell, and Joe Shields will now all be sporting directors on equal footing.
George BensonHOST
2:46
Winstanley has responsibility for all areas including transfer negotiations, player contracts, and different club departments, the medical performance and operations.
George BensonHOST
2:56
Shields oversees the academy and player pathways, and many of his day-to-day tasks align with a traditional technical director.
George BensonHOST
4:31
But I think we should be content with the fact that we at least attempted to change the model that clearly didn't work in the summer just gone.
George BensonHOST
4:39
And there was not any necessity to have two people in this role.
George BensonHOST
4:45
Now, obviously, it's seen as a widening sporting team, and you've still got three people there, Sam Jewell, Paul Winstanley, and Joe Shields, but I think a problem that Chelsea might have had, and again, I don't know about how these conversations go behind closed doors, I'm not involved with it, but the more people that you've got in a room, that usually means more people's approval.
George BensonHOST
5:06
It usually means more room for conflict when it comes to ideas.
