Before we get going with all the questions, I would like to know who or what inspires you to create today?

Yeah, so people who, who look at my comics will probably guess right away that classic pen and ink cartoonists like Joe Sacco and Robert Crumb are big inspirations to me.

I love Emil Ferris and My Favorite Thing Is Monsters.

A lot of my friends here in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia are huge inspirations to me.

[laughs] As I said, I, I'm not a, a trained visual artist.

Uh, I studied English in university and came to making comics later in life.

I've said a couple times now, I learned how to draw by looking at Robert Crumb and Joe Sacco comics and others who work in that sort of G nib penning style.

For this book, I read a lot.

Emil Ferris, this comic sensation for her book My Favorite Thing is Monsters, is sort of in residence right now at the museum hosting workshops and talks.

And coming up next week, Joe Sacco, the famous journalist who works in the comics medium, is going to be giving a talk.

For anyone who's a fan of illustrated narrative art, this is a big time to be in Basel.

And is there something to do with Basel that makes it so special, or is this just Basel embracing a really loved genre?

I think it's a little bit of both.

We are embracing the genre, but also we have the Cartoon Museum here, which puts on a lot of these displays.

They'd had a large show of Joe Sacco's work before, so they're bringing him back to talk about his work in general and also his new book.

And then Emil Ferris also had not had a retrospective before, and the Cartoon Museum is putting it on.

The Hoffman-Schomburg Knights of Columbus count to one of the big groups out today.

Fourth-degree member Joe Sacco getting that group together and bringing them to Wrigley Field.

Like, we saw this with General Niravan's Four Stars of Destiny.

We saw it with that Joe Sacco graphic novel.

They know it'll sell, but they just fold.

I get why it looks that way, but if you look at it from an industry perspective, navigating India's legal scrutiny has become this massive liability issue.

And so this sort of was a way to sort of do both.

in terms of graphic nonfiction, which I'm not really into the superhero stuff, but I love graphic nonfiction, like Joe Sacco's Journalism, Alison Bechdel's Graphic Memoirs.

And I teach them, of course, well, I've taught Mouse so many times and it works so well.

And Michael Vann and Liz Clark's Great Hanoi Rat Hunt, also really excellent.
