Joe Chambers

The album we'll feature is Right Now and Then, the debut recording as a leader by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, made in 1968 and featuring an amazing lineup.

Herbie Hancock on piano, Gary Bartz on alto saxophone, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums.

What a way to introduce yourself as a band leader at the age of 26.

Let's hear Toliver's Paper Man.

So as a guy who just loves jazz, that was a really great entry point.

I mean, you got Donald Byrd, you got Joe Chambers, and Ahmad Jamal.

Um, but I do like that he brought his dad in to blow on his own tunes, because he's like-

Yeah

I agree with that.

So for me-

The Joe Chambers-

Oh.

Before that, Bobby Hutcherson's vibraphone on Happenings, a recording from 1966.

Herbie Hancock, piano, Bob Crenshaw bass, Joe Chambers drums.

One more set of Jazz Spectrum coming up.

I'm Meadow and WVIK is my station.
