Joaquín Sorolla

Um, and I, I've been lucky enough to see a lot of these paintings.

Uh, I've, I've made sure to, I mean, I've, I've felt like half my life's been a pilgrimage to s- to, to see certain artist studios, uh, you know, R- Rembrandt's studio in, in Amsterdam and, and Sorolla's in, in Spain and, um, uh, I still want to, I still need to see Frederic Church's in, in, up in New York.

I haven't, I haven't been to that one just yet.

And that's illegal to some people.

And to me, what was fascinating to me about Sorolla, especially, is he'd open up the shadows and his whole painting would be about the shadow.

That bouncing light would be really washed out.

And to do that, you have to rethink and reframe your thinking.

I know just how I want the creatures to look, and I haven't much interest in one that isn't at least of the type of my preferred kind.

Because I am very tall and broad and deep-bosomed and vivid and high-colored and have strong white teeth that crunch up about as much food in the twenty-four hours as most field hands consume, and altogether I am very much like one of the most vigorous of Sorolla's paintings.

That is the probable pathological reason I have always preferred and evolved a Whistler masculine nocturne that retreats to the limits of my comprehension and then beckons me to follow.

All other men I have grouped beyond the border of my feminine nature and sought to waste no thought upon them.

And this is a tragedy.

I love Nichols, and am entirely unsatisfied with him.

He is the whistler nocturne that my Sorolla nature demands, and he eternally makes me hold out my hand to grasp nothing.

He stands just beyond.

Barcelona has more art.

Valencia is where Sorolla grew up and where he spent a lot of his time working.

And he also spent a lot of time in Madrid.
