People packed the roads, standing in places that left no room for error.

During the event, Portuguese driver Joaquim Santos was driving a Ford RS200 when he encountered spectators spilling into the road.

He swerved to avoid them, lost control, and crashed into the crowd.

Three people were killed and many more were injured.

It was right in the middle of the Group B era when the spectators were all over the road and standing in dangerous positions on the outside of corners and things.

And that was the pivotal event really in Group B in the World Rally Championship where Joachim Santos in a Ford RS200 left the road at speed and plowed into the spectators.

And look, I can't off the top of my head remember how many people were killed, but obviously any more than zero was too many.
