And so that's sort of like ground zero really.

Then I remember discovering Joanna Newsom and that's like, again, that was another one of those moments that was like, oh, like You can really do anything as a songwriter.

You can do anything you want to.

All of this stuff is like, there are rules.

And I think that you're more likely to make something that is enjoyable to listen to if you know some of those rules before you start trying to break them potentially.

yeah, you can really do anything.

And people like Joanna Newsome really showed me that.

And I, yeah, like I didn't come from a musicologist kind of household, so I didn't have a massive musical vocabulary.

And then...

That's when I became obsessed with like Joanna Newsom and stuff.

I grew up with 90s country music so I think that really influences the way I listen to music too, like all the women of 90s country, Faith Hill, Reba, Wynonna Judd.

And then when I got to college I was studying musical theater and feeling kind of like I regretted doing that.

Shut up.

I know, I love Bo Burnham.

I had to grow up listening to Joanna Newsom songs being about the fucking jizz in my pants guy.

Uh, features a little bit of Joanna Newsom, uh, full of blood and bone, and very much a bit of me.

The Sydney songwriter, musician, and novelist has spent over two decades building one of the most remarkable creative careers in Australian music and culture, releasing five solo albums, a collection of original children's songs, and two records as part of beloved supergroup Seeker Lover Keeper alongside Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann.

Along the way, she's earned five ARIA nominations, including two for Best Female Artist, toured with the likes of Paul Kelly, Joanna Newsom, and Bill Callahan, and written three critically acclaimed novels as well.

She is, in this host's humble opinion, one of the finest songwriters that Australia has ever produced, and last week, after a nine-year gap, Holly returned with Normal Magic, a record that is about finding wonder in the everyday, the ordinary, and the perspective that comes with time.

It's also a sonic step forward, which is bringing in new elements and pushing her sound in directions that she hasn't explored before this record.

It's very good.

But Milk-Eyed Bender, also fantastic album.

If you're a big Joanna Newsom fan but you haven't gone back and listened to that one, I recommend it.

I think I'm going to go for Joanna Newsom in California, which is really a play.

It's kind of a nine minute long song.

And there are no repeats, you know, the only repeated line is in California.

I don't know if she has played Green Man, but she's certainly not been ruddy playing Green Man.

I love it.
