Joanna, why does the world need an exhibition of art made with and of human hair?

I think the world needs it because it is something that was really important in our own history and has been largely lost and forgotten.

Why do you think that is? I think at a certain point, much like taxidermy, hair art started to be seen as creepy and as kind of a vestige of old Victorian ways of mourning, that kind of You know, the modern age saw the Victorians as being over the top in their mourning, and hair art was a big part of mourning.

They look old fashioned.

They look homespun, homemade, certainly They kind of look like the antithesis of the modern, I think you could say.

Do you find them creepy? You know, I don't find them creepy.

Or rather, I could say, I like their creepiness.

What you're describing sounds quite elaborate.

First of all, how on earth did you get interested in all of this in the first place?

Yeah, I mean, that's a question I get asked a lot, and I don't have an easy answer.

My pat answers, I think all children are interested in this, and I, for whatever reason, just didn't outgrow it.

I had the support of parents who nurtured my weird interests.

I was a geeky, science-y kid.

I liked playing at the pond.

I liked catching animals and freeing them, I should hasten to add.
