This is based on Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary K. Wolfe and was produced by Frank Marshall, husband of Kathleen Kennedy and Robert Watts, starring Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Cassidy, Kathleen Turner and Charles Fleischer as Roger Rabbit himself.

This movie made $329 million against a budget of 70 million.

That was back in 80s dollars.

Coogan's film debut was actually as a voice actor in the 1981 Disney animated film The Fox and the Hound as young Todd.

Joanna Cassidy plays Rose.

Cassidy at this point was probably best known for her role in Blade Runner as Zora, along with playing Dolores in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

But Cassidy had been in film and TV since the early 70s.

Of course, Petit played Zack.

The producers cut a few of his scenes to keep the film on schedule, and sadly, Petit never conquered his addictions, and he died of a drug overdose in the year 2000.

This film was remade in 2024 with mostly a black cast, but Danielle Harris, Keith Coogan, and Joanna Cassidy do have small roles in the remake.

All right, we have a special guest, and that is Mark Alden Taylor, and he joins me to talk about this film.

Two questions I have for you.

One, did Blade Runner flop back in '82 because George Lucas had reoriented the mass audience's taste for retro-futuristic science fiction so radically five years earlier with Star Wars? And two, is Blade Runner a movie for you today that was simply ahead of its time and now seems very much what Ridley Scott intended it to be, an LA story with legs longer than Joanna Cassidy's?

Yeah

... because it's, it just is what it is.

It's not much, you know? And, and you get all this set up, and one of my favorite scenes is the one with Joanna Cassidy as the snake handler [laughs], you know, in the window.

Yeah.

That sounds good.
