Jesus movement

Lots of music.

We've talked before about Larry Norman, uh, and the Jesus Movement, and how that leads to, like, contemporary Christian music as a business.

I- in a lot of ways, because it's so 20th century, these nondenominational denominations really think of themselves like franchises.

And you can see that with a lot of mega churches like, uh, Mars Hill or something, where they'll have satellite churches, but it's sort of like going to a KFC.

Got it.

This is a typical story for Hal Lindsey.

This is the early days of the Jesus movement.

This is a bunch of hippies, but they're evangelical Christians.

God is bringing America full circle, but at a higher level.

Many are not aware that the charismatic and Jesus people movements of the 60s and 70s greatly impacted the entire west coast of America, California, Oregon, and Washington.

This has begun again and will only increase.

It is critically important that we pray into this.

That is no understatement.

In- it reshaped American culture, intensified political discourse, and redefined family.

How did this impact the movements we're s- we're speaking of? Charismatic movement, Jesus People Movement.

Well, this tumult and generation gap of the '60s and '70s overlapped with the Jesus People Movement, creating two extremes, a wonderful revival amid great turmoil.

That is what we're gonna talk about this morning.

Now, some of you lived through the Jesus movement.

Raise your hand if you're a Jesus movement person, saved in the Jesus movement, lived through it.

We had an era in history called the Jesus Movement where God began to sweep across our nation, and many would be able to testify that the church was not ready for what God was about to do.

My hope this morning, and I know this last five weeks in this series, is that we would prepare with faith, with hope, and with urgency that God is about to sweep across America again with another Jesus Movement, and he is preparing his church for that hour.

Do I have an amen this morning for that? Here we go.

We're going to jump in.

This generation is so open to being invited to church, but we have a chasm between where the church is and where this generation is.

Come on

... a non-Christian background, experienced The Jesus Movement, led to Jesus by some hippies here in Orange County, California.

And what I am prophesying for this generation is that we are seeing a revival and people are getting baptized around the world in epic numbers.

Mm.

So here's something that, um, I was also thinking about, and it's I believe that the thesis most people miss in your book is the direct lineage.

The same psychedelic counterculture that produced the Brotherhood of Eternal Love also produced the Jesus people.

Yeah.

And those Jesus people eventually became contemporary Christian music.

At what specific moment did the church domesticate what the Spirit was doing in that culture?

Yeah, that's...

Hmm

...

Okay.

Because... yes you itinerate you travel you train you equip yeah you've been in ministry 45 years pastored multiple churches you've seen growth you got saved in the jesus movement like that's right you're one of the few guys that's been through it all like i don't know a section of ministry that you haven't really like touched in some capacity over the years wow like legit, you've been a chaplain.

That's right.

Like police chaplain.

Like what is like, what's, I mean, what's next?

That's a good question.

So, you know, uh, it's funny, you know, you, I got saved in the Jesus movement and, uh, it was, I was 16 years old.

I had a friend going through drug withdrawals and right.

We did a series on a Sunday morning some while back called Always Only Jesus based on this book.

During the era known as the Jesus Movement back in the '60s and the '70s, and I was involved in the '70s, early '70s, when this revival on the West Coast broke out, and there were all these people falling in love with Jesus.

They were not falling in love with churches or religion.

They were saying no to religion.

But not everybody thought He was enough.

And I remember as all of us young people were filling this tent in Costa Mesa, California, packing it out every Sunday and Sunday night and Thursday night Bible study, that some of the local pastors in Orange County were quite upset that this Calvary Chapel was seeing such monumental growth with so many young people.

And so one clergyman was quoted in the Orange County Register, the news- local newspaper, about the church I was attending and about the Jesus Movement and the Jesus freaks that were all along the beach.

And this clergyman s- you know, kind of disparaged the whole movement by saying, "Well, all they have is Jesus." [laughs] I remember reading that, and I thought, "What a statement." Yeah.
