What does intervention look like, especially when sometimes we think, hey, this may be none of my business? Or how do we intervene in a way that makes sense, in a way that's helpful, in a way that's appropriate without maybe stepping over some line we shouldn't be stepping over?
17:32
Yeah.
17:33
None of my business is what keeps really good people from giving really helpful support to people who need it the most.
17:40
So to illustrate that, I'll share a story.
17:42
On a team that I was working with previously, we had a whole team meeting because most of our team felt very strongly about not hiring a particular candidate that had applied for a job on the team.
17:52
And there was one member of our team who was very passionate about hiring this person.
17:56
They really wanted them on the team.

Wow.
28:10
Where is the line between I'm a people leader driving a business result and I'm a therapist? So the first question is, how the hell are they supposed to notice when people don't
28:26
show them? And then go from there.
28:29
You're probably going to have to ask me the second question again because I'm about to go off on several different directions here.
28:33
The first of which is that if you... are having to hide your true self so much at work.
28:42
The reality of your struggles, the reality of what's going on, if you have to lock that shit down so tightly, that is a broader culture problem.
28:50
And one of the things that can be addressed or that can be done to address that is how do we create a culture where people are comfortable showing up for their whole life at work? That's part of it.
28:58
You can have feelings about that, but hold that thought for a second.

But can you use de-escalation techniques as the person in the situation to protect yourself as much as possible while you are Don't use them to stay in your workplace if you are in an actual toxic work environment, but can you use them to protect yourself while you're looking for a way out?
18:22
Mm.
18:22
And now you feel obligated to make sure that I'm okay, and then we just disrupted that whole dynamic.
18:26
So well-intentioned, but misplaced.
18:29
Or they try to fix things.
18:30
So you lost your job, and I'm like, "Well, have you started looking on Indeed for other jobs yet?" And you're like-I'm in the crisis.
18:36
I just lost my job.
18:37
We can't talk about solutions yet.

12 MINS LATER

Mm.
