So you have the writer, Ben Mears, returning to his hometown, and suddenly Barlow and his human familiar, Straker, move into the haunted Marston house.

But the genius of King's architecture isn't the vampire itself.

King operates as this invisible sociologist.

He meticulously catalogs the resentments, the hidden affairs, the dive bar politics, and the economic struggles of Jerusalem's lot.

He creates a fully realized, deeply flawed community.

It makes the viewer question how one localized version of Maine could possibly have so much terrible luck.

You have resurrected zombie cats, murderous Saint Bernards, vampires in Jerusalem's Lot, and whatever else is lurking in the woods.

It's just a constant barrage of horror.

This specific scene demonstrates that the residents of these towns are completely irrevocably desensitized to madness.
