With a different actor playing Henry Hill, right.

45:34
With Jeremy Strong playing Henry Hill.
Scott FeinbergHOST
45:36
Who had been in trial.
Scott FeinbergHOST
45:37
That's where you met on trial? On Molly's Game.
Scott FeinbergHOST
45:40
Right, right,
Aaron SorkinGUEST
45:40
right.
Aaron SorkinGUEST
45:41
You know, I saw Jeremy Strong in the big short.
Aaron SorkinGUEST
45:44
It was the first time I saw him.
JakeHOST
57:20
Like what Mikey Madison's doing is just at a different level and tone than what Jeremy Allen White is doing.
JakeHOST
57:27
And then Zuckerberg, played by Jeremy Strong, who I usually adore Jeremy Strong, he's playing this like – Like a cartoon villain, which would work if this were a movie like primetime.
JakeHOST
57:39
Like a primetime version of Mark Zuckerberg with Jeremy Strong.
JakeHOST
57:44
Oh, fuck yeah.
JakeHOST
57:44
That'd be so cool.

7 MINS LATER

JakeHOST
65:11
Yay.
JakeHOST
65:14
Yeah, it just feels like I think there's a level of... sorkin's politics that just has permeated the story and how he's telling it where it's just like we just need a technocrat to change the way i do think he believes like if zuckerberg were just a different guy in charge then things would be fine you know
AlexHOST
65:30
yeah that was kind of the vibe i was getting too because that was such a two-dimensional way of presenting him which is such a shame because yeah i really like jeremy strong and he's nailing the voice but like the Yeah, he is like Darth Vader whenever he's on screen.
Adam KempenaarHOST
71:06
Jeremy Allen White is Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, who contributed to the paper's reporting on the internal documents that Haugen shared.
Adam KempenaarHOST
71:14
Jeremy Strong is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg this time.
Adam KempenaarHOST
71:20
Since you suggested you may have an answer, Josh, why don't we go ahead and go back to producer Sam's prompt? Maybe he read your review.
Adam KempenaarHOST
71:29
I have not at this point.
Adam KempenaarHOST
75:00
Yeah.
Adam KempenaarHOST
75:01
Right? Like, yes, it's interesting.
Adam KempenaarHOST
75:04
This film that's about the intersection of journalism and technology and social media and the havoc that this has undoubtedly caused, the problems that now seem insurmountable and what wasn't done about it and what we can or can't do about it, whether or not we can put the horse back in the barn, the intersection with politics, the... appreciation i have for and i always have for some of the sorkin style of writing which which does come through here in parts all of that makes it more or less enjoyable the other thing that does make it make it work mostly or some of the time is watching for me jeremy strong play zuckerberg and here's what i mean oh okay here's why because i do think he's got he's got a very tough task He does have to – he has to make Mark Zuckerberg seem human.
Adam KempenaarHOST
76:04
He has to bring depth to this character, to a character, I'll say, who it is very easy to portray like a character, to portray not human, to portray like a machine.
Aoife BarryHOST
11:37
so transparent with my facial reactions to things it's a bad trait.
Lauren MurphyHOST
11:42
I had really high hopes for it because Jeremy Strong is in it right and he's brilliant in in everything or most things but tell me more and like Aaron Sorkin like the pedigree is there so what what went wrong?
Aoife BarryHOST
11:56
so you'll probably remember that the social network which is like the story of facebook being founded was directed by david fincher who's just always a really great director and even though it only came out a few years after facebook was actually formed like it really did tell a really good and important story and like it really set the scene for some of the issues i think that we're going to be going forward with facebook the social network was written by aaron sorkin the social right the social reckoning was written and directed by aaron sorkin I personally don't really tend to like Aaron Sorkin as a director and I'm not massive fan of his kind of dialogue and his scripts depends on the piece of work that it is so I was interested to see what this would he do with this because this is not a sequel but it is of kind of following out of the story of what's been happening to facebook now meta over the past couple of uh kind of years maybe the past decade or so so this basically centers around frances haugen who you might remember a couple of years ago she had joined facebook's um civic integrity team in 2019 and she then a couple years later became a whistleblower from inside facebook and basically she wanted to prove and could effectively prove that Facebook leadership prioritized engagement and revenues, like making money and having people on the sites or on their apps above user safety.
Aoife BarryHOST
13:09
So she's well worth it.
Aoife BarryHOST
15:38
So I just basically think like if the two characters, two main characters are depicted or is a little bit incapable or not very... sure of themselves.
Aoife BarryHOST
15:45
I felt that undermined these two people in real life who actually were very good at their jobs.
Aoife BarryHOST
15:50
And then you have Jeremy Strong, who does a really good impression of Zuckerberg.
Aoife BarryHOST
15:53
Too old to play him, does a good impression of him.

thought him and Jeremy Strong's conversations were really great.
ZachHOST
57:14
And they're back and forth on like, you know, the fucking, we're the public square and no, you're not.
ZachHOST
57:19
You got to censor it and take it down.
LiamHOST
59:29
I feel like the whole thing was Jaden
ZachHOST

leaning.
ZachHOST
59:34
If you want me to go out of my way to now lean the other way and keep it balanced, I can say that even listening to the episode, I wasn't convinced that Jaden really liked Jeremy Strong that much.
ZachHOST
59:44
Like, he was going, yeah, no, he's good.
Monika ScottHOST
51:53
But I do like because I care about like movies being good and stuff.
Monika ScottHOST
51:59
I really, really like when an actor takes like I like Jeremy Strong and I like Anne Hathaway.
Monika ScottHOST
52:05
Like I like these actors that take their craft and more seriously than people think is appropriate because you know he's doing a job for me so i sure i like the end result
Emily FayeHOST
52:19
i think sometimes it's just hard not to be like oh brother like when you're hearing i
Monika ScottHOST
52:24
don't want to hang with any of these people no that's true to be clear none of them we're not we're not really we're not turning it down but we're not really the sort of podcast that's like chasing getting to be in a room with these with jeremy or whatever like jeremy strong
Emily FayeHOST
52:40
i'm sorry i didn't think you were the right fit for mark zuckerberg and the social reckoning um please forgive me he'll be okay um but yeah because i mean like he is obviously wronged But then he also goes kind of nuts, you know, and then goes nuts because it's like when he gets his face back.
Emily FayeHOST
53:11
he could have just focused on like okay
Anna SingerHOST
15:47
Yes, chef, exactly.
Josh AxelrodGUEST
15:49
And Jeremy Strong takes over for Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg.
Josh AxelrodGUEST
15:54
People know Jeremy Strong probably as Kendall Roy from Succession.
Josh AxelrodGUEST
15:58
It is a hell of a performance.
Josh AxelrodGUEST
16:01
And again, oh, and I...
Sam RobertsHOST
30:27
Right.
Sam RobertsHOST
30:27
They all say Jeremy Strong is a method actor.
Nicole RyanHOST
30:31
Yes.
Sam RobertsHOST
30:31
To the point where Brian Cox hated him on the set of Succession.
WillHOST
45:10
Enough of my voice on that and I think that reflects through a lot of what people have said.
WillHOST
45:13
I want to end with a comment from one of the community and then a clip from actor Jeremy Strong on this note of seriousness and how we treat the work.
WillHOST
45:27
So the final quote from the community here comes from gore underscore e 504. who says, so right now I'm in the birth phase of doing airbrush clothing while working 10.5 hour shifts at Amazon.
WillHOST
45:44
Rough stuff.
WillHOST
46:25
Know that it will be challenging, know that it will be overwhelming but also that you can take smaller consistent bites and achieve your goals in a balanced manner.
WillHOST
46:34
Love.
WillHOST
46:37
Well, love to you too and good luck with that birth phase of what you're doing there and jumping over to Jeremy Strong here for a kind of reflection of some of those ideas.

How much is your approach helpful to a director and your fellow castmates? How much does it throw them off you? You're super involved in these things.
ColtonHOST
41:55
Sorkin as a director is obviously not in the same league as David Fincher whatsoever.
ColtonHOST
42:01
And I much prefer Jesse Eisenberg's Zuck over Jeremy Strong's.
ColtonHOST
42:05
But as your sort of run-of-the-mill political thriller that would be, I don't know, straight to Netflix, it's fine.
ColtonHOST
42:14
I was like, okay, yeah, this is all right.
