Several other nations have already taken action over the settlements, and the latest development leaves Israel looking increasingly isolated at a time when support for it is waning in its traditional ally, the US.

So how serious a moment is this for the Israeli government? I asked our international editor, Jeremy Bowen.

I think they have to take it seriously.

I think they, their tone is already defiant, and that's going to deepen.

You know, you can, you can make an argument, which is a pretty strong argument, that the silence over many years of Israel's allies about what was going on while at the same time they're saying there should be a two-state solution, actually made them complicit in what was happening, enabled what was happening, and they are trying and, you know, many Palestinians would say, "It's a bit late, guys, isn't it?" You know, there are seven hundred thousand Israelis plus in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem territory, occupied since nineteen sixty-seven.

And that is something [chuckles] how do you, how do you turn that clock back? Very, very difficult, not to say impossible, but no one has actually ever come up with a solution that is better.

Meanwhile, there's been another flare-up in fighting between the US and Iran, with US Central Command saying it's destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after an American warship was targeted.

Oman has been holding separate negotiations with Iran about reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

I got more on all these developments with our international editor, Jeremy Bowen, starting with the US's failure to persuade Israel to drop its opposition to the Gaza plan.

I think the breakthrough, if anything, judging by the statements that came out, was actually from the point of view of Benjamin Netanyahu, because Jared Kushner, who is always has a very strong reputation as a close friend of Israel, I mean, he seems to have absorbed Israel's position entirely.

I mean, of course, we don't know what he's been saying to Hamas, but the contacts I've had with some Hamas officials and looking at the wider picture there, it seems pretty clear that the Hamas agreement to disarm is predicated on a mutual process, and that's how it was presented to begin with, and then they brought a peace people, Mr. Mladic, their diplomat, uh, after a meeting with Netanyahu sort of walked that one back.

And Donald Trump is in a situation where not only does he face elections, this may be becoming his legacy, and that's not something he wants.

He does not want, above all, to be a loser.
