Israel hits back at sanctions on settlers
O
3:38Oliver ConwayHOST
Several other nations have already taken action over the settlements, and the latest development leaves Israel looking increasingly isolated at a time when support for it is waning in its traditional ally, the US.
O
3:51Oliver ConwayHOST
So how serious a moment is this for the Israeli government? I asked our international editor, Jeremy Bowen.
J
3:57Jeremy BowenCORRESPONDENT
I think they have to take it seriously.
J
3:58Jeremy BowenCORRESPONDENT
I think they, their tone is already defiant, and that's going to deepen.
J
7:39Jeremy BowenCORRESPONDENT
You know, you can, you can make an argument, which is a pretty strong argument, that the silence over many years of Israel's allies about what was going on while at the same time they're saying there should be a two-state solution, actually made them complicit in what was happening, enabled what was happening, and they are trying and, you know, many Palestinians would say, "It's a bit late, guys, isn't it?" You know, there are seven hundred thousand Israelis plus in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem territory, occupied since nineteen sixty-seven.
J
8:12Jeremy BowenCORRESPONDENT
And that is something [chuckles] how do you, how do you turn that clock back? Very, very difficult, not to say impossible, but no one has actually ever come up with a solution that is better.

M
52:59Mark SteelHOST
Thank you for an absolute... brilliant podcast um i spend far too long every day saying what the fuck is going on and it makes me cross and preserves a bit of sanity oh the website makes me laugh and preserves a bit of my sanity what else can we do pauline but try and preserve each other's sanity when whatever it is own the same as the poorest 50% and then they tell the poorest 50% it's in their interest to back the very richest of all of them and that is clearly insane and all the other things that go on with it like bombing Iran for reasons and I've been saying for a while I genuinely heard this Jeremy Bowen one morning giving his account all serious what's the latest on the news concerning a possible deal? And he had to go, well, this morning the president was saying that he's received a present from Iran.
M

M

J
10:19Jeremy BowenCORRESPONDENT
I think the breakthrough, if anything, judging by the statements that came out, was actually from the point of view of Benjamin Netanyahu, because Jared Kushner, who is always has a very strong reputation as a close friend of Israel, I mean, he seems to have absorbed Israel's position entirely.
J
10:37Jeremy BowenCORRESPONDENT
I mean, of course, we don't know what he's been saying to Hamas, but the contacts I've had with some Hamas officials and looking at the wider picture there, it seems pretty clear that the Hamas agreement to disarm is predicated on a mutual process, and that's how it was presented to begin with, and then they brought a peace people, Mr. Mladic, their diplomat, uh, after a meeting with Netanyahu sort of walked that one back.
J
14:23Jeremy BowenCORRESPONDENT
And Donald Trump is in a situation where not only does he face elections, this may be becoming his legacy, and that's not something he wants.

A

A

So I just wonder, from where you're s- standing, does it seem like things have gone a bit quiet on the diplomatic front? I'm just thinking a year ago, there was all sorts of diplomatic activity, and it sounds like Ukraine was gonna be m- marched to the negotiating table.
