Rosie ElvinHOST
So can we start with you telling us a little bit about your career journey and what has led you to your current work?

Jenny HamiltonGUEST
Sure yeah well I began I did my like undergrad degree in media and film and also I studied politics and history as well so but after I graduated I was sort of working in the art centre doing all kinds of bits you know people joked that it was run by clones of me because I was doing like I'd be the person taking a ticket the person serving you a drink and Usher and things like that but what from there I kind of ended up moving into the helping professions and I worked on sort of education and careers helplines using a lot of counselling skills and And applying a lot of different psychological theories about transition and life stages and career stages and how people decide about careers and things like that.

Jenny HamiltonGUEST
And eventually that sort of evolved into becoming a counsellor, having also become kind of a workplace-based trainer in that area and a manager.

Jenny HamiltonGUEST
When I became a counsellor, what I noticed was that my clients were often talked about film and TV shows that they'd watched and used them to sort of, you know, illustrate what they were talking about.

Jenny HamiltonGUEST
There's a character who's like the person they're trying to describe or they could relate to something, the character.

Jenny HamiltonGUEST
character was going through or the journey that they went on and so I thought that was really interesting so I started looking into how do you work with films you know in therapy and there wasn't really an awful lot done so from there I started kind of writing and then as I later on became an academic sort of you know researching in that area and I kind of developed my own sort of models, my own ways of working with this, which I think we'll talk about later.
