So can you tell us what is mastery learning for those who haven't heard the term before, and how is it different from traditional medical education?

Jennifer YeeGUEST
So when you're thinking of procedures that make you nervous as an EM doc, I'm thinking the really high acuity, low occurrence stuff like Blakemore's or other procedures such as transvenous pacing that we just don't get to do very often.

Jennifer YeeGUEST
So imagine if I told you and I told your entire class of residents, "We are gonna get you from whatever baseline skills you currently have to you all are going to be high performers, and there's gonna be just minimal variation between how you all practice." So essentially, you're all going to be able to do this, and you're going to become very objectively competent and hopefully more confident as well.

Jennifer YeeGUEST
So that is the basic framework behind mastery learning, is getting everybody to a really high level with a minimal variability.

Jennifer YeeGUEST
So a group of educators have really taken the concept of mastery learning and put it within medical education, and this includes Diane Wayne, uh, Jeff Barsuck, and William McGaughey.
