Well, two years ago, James and Jennifer Crumbley, whose son Ethan had killed four people at a Michigan high school in 2021, were convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Ethan himself later told a court he alone was responsible for the crime, but prosecutors argued his parents failed to safely store a gun in their home and to address their son's worsening mental ill health.

Jennifer Crumbley offered this in her defense.

We were good parents.

We were the average family.

The trial was part of a broader push to hold more people accountable for a school shooting, including the shooter's parents and responding law enforcement officers.

This case bore close similarities to the trials of James and Jennifer Crumbley, whose then 15-year-old son killed four students in 2021 at his high school in Oxford, Michigan.

They were each convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison.

And I do recall that, and I remember thinking that was the right call to make.
