He was working.

He was a professor at University Jena, but he was working with Carl Zeiss, who had his microscope company in Jena.

And, um, and so he had all these prescriptions about how many lenses, how to grind them, you know, how to space them to exactly to get to the diffraction limit.

Um, Zeiss goes and follows those exact rules, and it was crap.

You have been absolutely smashing teaching and training.

So I became quite interested in him back then.

And then he came up again when I wrote my book, Magnificent Rebels, which is about a group of, you know, rebellious thinkers and philosophers in this small German town, Jena.

And one of the main protagonists there is a woman called Caroline Schlegel, and she was this very fierce and quite wonderful, I think, woman who lived at the, at the end of the 18th century, and she was a very, very good friend of his.

They had m- they had met through Forster's wife, and they had lived together for a couple of years in, in Mainz, which is a town which then in turn becomes the first German republic, which George Forster co-founded.
