It's funny because in Eli Lilly's official report, he reports similar, but he has a much different later time.

According to Lilly, he wrote, and then, quote, on the 19th instant, I did not become engaged until 2.30 when our brigade moved in support of Jefferson C. Davis' division, at which time I shelled the enemy lines to cover the movement.

My position at this time was on the west side in a face in Gordon's Mill, At the Chattanooga Lafayette Road, four pieces near the right of an open field and two pieces on the left corner of the same field all retired at the edge of the timber.

So what does he say? He basically split his battery.

It's December 9th, 1864, really close to the end.

Union Major General Jefferson C. Davis, ooh, that's a name to have for, in the Union.

[laughs] His troops are crossing a flooded creek on a pontoon bridge.
