Jeff Lorber

I was at a concert in Los Angeles.

I went to a concert to see my friend Jeff Lorber play.

And Carmen was there with her brother.

I didn't know her.

So we played like old jazz standards like Satin Doll and Jada and like I'd sing Chattanooga Shoeshine Boy and, you know, stuff like that.

sort of a mixture of things you know dad was a jazz guy primarily so it sort of leaned into that um that sort of milieu but we did play some like pop fusion stuff like stuff from jeff lorber he likes some of the like the 80s fusion tune 88 from jeff lorber group that was one of our big hits um I wasn't into the fiddling at the time, but I had this improvising kind of thing and not being just on the page.

I went out to Aspen Music Festival to then study with my soon-to-be teacher when I was beginning college, Paul Cantor, who I was going to study with at UM.

And but while I was out there, I met these this group of street performers that are full time street performers that they moved from Key West to Aspen every year in a 35 foot RV and just performing.

Oh, yeah.

This particular track, I kind of built this s- poppy synthwave s- canvas of a track really, and I was trying to find, you know, someone who I felt was of the right caliber and the right kind of voicing to carry the kind of pop element of it through.

Yep.

So, uh, yeah, long story short, I came across Elli, and, um, uh, yeah, we, uh, we clicked really well.

Oh, okay

...

it just the collaboration wasn't working, so I backed out of that and, and found someone else, but it happens.

Um-

The track you just heard is Speed of Light, and before that, Tuesday's Swing.

Now, the original powerhouse collaboration was Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb, and Everett Harp.

Sadly, Chuck Loeb passed in 2017.

Paul Jackson Jr. now makes up the whole band together with Everett Harp and Jeff Lorber.

Had a chance to interview Jeff Lorber a few years ago.

What a great guy, and very prolific indeed.

Coming up next, we've got Up For Soul by Tiwayo, spelt T-I-W-A-Y-O.
