Jayber Crow

And this'll come in the poetry, but he does have some beautiful poetry.

And, um, Bret Lott, um, raves about his, his fiction, especially Jayber Crow, so I, I need to read that, uh, very soon.

But, uh, this is a poem by Wendell Berry about being a poet.

Make a place to sit down.

His overriding concerns are that people... understand that a life well lived is a life that is rooted in place, that places can be sacred, that places that were made for a type of communion that is not spread thin, that's not, you know, online, that is embodied and personal, and that the glory of human life is not in fame or fortune or accomplishing big things, but in living the life that that you have been given and living it well, like that there is a contentedness and peace in the small and the personal, that in an age which glorifies money and fame and being mobile and travel, like that we're missing out on the beauty of what God has given us.

And that's sort of, that's the beauty of Port William is, is this intimate communion where you see people born and grow and marry and die and how their lives interconnect with each other and become an avenue for grace in that community.

I'm going to read, I'm going to read the section from Jayber Crowe because I think it's really pertinent.

There's so much, I was like, how do I, how do I pick? I was just marking stuff and marking stuff and, When we get to his theology, I have a section I want to read about what he said about God.

But I think like this emblem, like this just really sums up kind of how he feels about place.

But Jayber Crows is thinking he's going to be leaving Port William.

And really small town.

It resembles in a lot of ways the town that Wendell Berry writes about in Jayber Crow.

Just a very, very small town.

My family has been in that town for, you know, And just a really great upbringing.

It's beautifully written.

And typically when you talk to people who read Wendell, women will say Hannah Coulter is their favorite, and men will say Jaber Crowe is their favorite.

Interesting.
