Jay Whitaker

A forgery, perhaps, or a deliberate attempt to mislead.

Anya was certain she'd caught a glimpse of the same hand in an old attendance sheet from five years before, a sheet filled out by J. Whitaker, a former assistant dismissed from the library after a string of petty thefts.

Digging further, Alden requested board records for all staff key assignments over the last year.

Through a slow hour poring over the yellowed logs, Alice discovered a troubling entry, an unreturned master key marked as lost by J. Whitaker months after his exit from employment.

No formal report had been filed, no one alerted to missing access.

This revelation, paired with Alden's discovery about the insurance beneficiary, L. Haskett, sharpened the focus on past staff entanglements.

Alice laid the master log in the middle, its page corners dog-eared, entries in tight blue script.

Detective Markham ran a finger over the listings.
