Jay Hill

So I'm going to take half credit for that.

It's a good week to have a veteran secondary, especially when you play a scheme that, you know, Jay Hill wants to mix coverages up and trick the quarterback of the line of scrimmage.

And those guys have played a lot of football, some of them for Michigan's national championship or college football playoff team.

So that showed up today in a big way.

That is why.

Des has been so concerned about his big blue Michigan Wolverines, Kyle Whittingham, Jay Hill, Jason Beck, that he doesn't actually have any time to do any sort of research on on any other games.

today yeah on the drive down I asked uh I was talking with you you know because you'll be able to maybe shed some more about regarding the history of tests with BYU but this is the first test You have a new defensive coordinator.

None against Kelly Papanga, right? I think Kelly would do a great job.

The biggest question mark for me, Ben, is how do in-game adjustments come? Jay Hill was phenomenal at that.

That needs to be tested.

So this Michigan team, they didn't play a complete game.

I'm sure they're going to talk about too many penalties, but they win the turnover battle, which is big in this football game, a football game of this magnitude, and I just can't say enough about Jay Hill and the defense.

They've allowed one touchdown now through two games, and the Sooners, really had those two drives, and that was about it.

In the fourth quarter, Michigan's defense came up huge.

And offense proceeded to punch it in.

And that was a huge series of events in the game.

Jay Hill put together a tremendous plan.

It was attacking John Mateer, their quarterback, but also the secondary, the play that we saw them make.

Now, Michigan has defended this type of offense well in the past, but obviously there's big changes to the Michigan coaching staff with Kyle Whittingham coming in, but having to leave his defensive coordinator behind because Morgan Scala replaced him at Utah.

So he turned to the other school in the state and brought BYU's defensive coordinator, Jay Hill, with him.

Now, Hill runs an aggressive type of scheme, which tends to do well at defending the pass.

And that's worked well for him in the Big 12 with some of the good passing offenses that he has faced in that league.

He was with him in Oklahoma last year and came with him from Washington State the previous season.

So this is a system that Mateer knows really well.

And I think they can exploit some weaknesses now jay hill likes to disguise his coverages a lot which is great when you're defending a team that throws the ball a lot but disguising what you're doing before the snap doesn't matter as much against the read option where the quarterback is primarily concerned with One player's movement right off the snap.

And so the disguising what you're doing beforehand, less effective.

They might try to test the linebackers.

Can Jay Hill draw something up to...

Figure that out.

Now, you've got to find a way to mitigate those issues.

You've got to find a way to get off the field.

You get a third and short, you've got to find a way to get off the field.

I think one of the most important things is if Jay Hill's defense is predicated on having turnovers, which it has been in his career, you need to get some turnovers.

You need to force some turnovers.

Who is their defensive coordinator? I had it written down.

I don't know much about Jay Hill.

You know, I don't know how different it is.

So is it going to be a style that's going to be more cognizant and try to contain the run game? Because if it's not, I say let's go and let's at least, you know, Ted brought it up a lot.

Some of those boots last week, I mean, he never ended up keeping it on one of them.

But if he did, there was a lot of grass in front of him a tear.

Yeah, Jay Hill's really good.

He was at Weber State, defensive coordinator.

I am very interested in y'all's defense because your defense isn't super young.

And I like Jay Hill.

I went back and watched some of the BYU games, especially the tech games.

And whether Kyle Whittingham was there or not, Michigan's always prided itself on physicality at the line of scrimmage and running the football.

I thought Jay Hill's defense was pretty good.

They gave up 12 points in the game.

that's not a bad effort from your defense.
