Jay Adams

Yeah, at the time it was already like legendary to us.

Like when we would see Tony Alva or Jay Adams skateboarding somewhere like Arthur Lake, we skated with him some and, and Stacey Peralta actually took me and my friends to some skate parks.

He was a really nice guy.

And he had like a little Volkswagen hatchback.

I had to use things in Imperial Beach and then some.

the effects and just make it work and which was really fun and that movie so immediately when I got the job they said well we need to probably do a rewrite on the script so I went and met each of the real three main characters actually about five or six or eight of the main characters and just hung out with them I went to Hawaii spent three days with Jay went with Tony down to Oceanside you know every everywhere I could just soak up everything everything everything and And then, you know, just put it all into the script.

When I got to Hawaii, I almost immediately got arrested for a misdemeanor because that character, the Jay Adams character that Emile Hirsch plays, is, you know, very wild.

And he'll run around and steal mangoes from people's trees.

And we got chased down the road and went to the Turtle Bay Hotel.

I didn't surf in the mornings because I was going to school at night.

I was riding the Fruit Bowl or some other legendary pool with Jay Adams and Tony Alva and Steve Olsen and the whole crew.

Then one day, I showed up at the Fruit Bowl and I was stoned.

I'd taken a volume and I drank a beer and I brought Danny Estrada with me.

yeah so it's so like archie used to have all those friends growing up i think yeah he would say he would be like solo like a cholo bro like i would hang out with the surfers yeah yeah so

Yeah, he's kind of like Jay Adams was in Lords of Dogtown.

Yeah.

You know, kind of that guy.

And Strider had come down with like some of that crew.

Like he literally came to our apartment with Jay Adams once and some other Venice guys.

So I met him, and then he's like, oh, I like what you're doing.

He goes, you ever make guns? I'm like, oh, I made a couple for myself.

There's that great documentary, Dogtown and Z-Boys.

Talks about these originators, Jay Adams, Stacey Peralta, Peggy O'Keefe, all these skaters that congregated in that area there and made it so influential there.

This also happened to be during the summer that L.A. had the worst droughts ever.

We're talking the late 70s.

And all of us had skated, you know, separately.

And the people in the neighborhood, the kids in the neighborhood who were Tony Alva, Jay Adams, I've known, you know, since he was three or four.

And so, you know, Jay, you know, wrote our surfboards.
