Jaws

I was like, is this for kids? It's not, but it is.

I also remember picking up Jaws by Peter Benchley when I was far too young to read it because there are some naughty bits in that.

Yeah, that's definitely been behind the curtain, isn't it?

A little bit, yeah.

But even as a kid, when I was definitely too young, my parents were very strict apart from watching telly.

I watched all the telly available.

And I used to watch, we had to take Jaws off the telly and I used to watch it regularly.

Is that why you never go in the water here on the island? You just never go in the water because you're scared?

Wait, funny aside though, because this podcast is where you and I find out all of the parallels of our lives.

My dad, who had just terrible judgment, just generally not a person who should have parented, but loved to read, gave me two books at the age of 10. which I do credit with my lifelong love of fiction, but those books were Jaws and The Godfather.

Those are both great, great books, to be fair.

Great books.

But the first thing you have to do is get rid of that stupid shark.

It was Jaws.

And then he looked at me and said, you're nothing in this business until you turn down your first multi-million copy bestseller.

And

And then maybe let me think of one.

like a formative book oh I remember being a young teenager reading Jaws maybe too young and just being like up until the middle of the night reading that book and it having a big impact on me you know one of those books when you're really young and maybe I shouldn't have read it I was too young but it got images in my head that are still there today

I think I did.

I read The Thorn Birds very early, so when I was 10, which was inappropriate.

And I read Jaws when I was too young.

So apart from The Sharks, there was some really inappropriate stuff in there, which I can still remember.

You need to..." And then she married him anyway, and then she's surprised that he's kinda cold.

In the movie or the book, uh, Jaws by Peter Benchley, uh, there's the wife of Chief Brody has an affair with her high school sweetheart who became a marine biologist or something like that and, and all of that.

And I mean, her husband is a...

I remember there's a scene where he's rubbing her belly, moving a little further up to her boobs, and she says, "Well, I already took my sleeping pills, but you can go ahead if you want." And then he says, "Well, I'm not very big on screwing corpses." And then she says, "Well, that was uncalled for." And, you know, there's sort of conflict that happens in these kinds of situations.

Yeah, that is good.

The movie we're talking about's called Jaws.
