First Brahmana There was formerly the proud Gargaya Balakhi, a man of great reading.

He said to Ajatasatru of Kasi, Shall I tell you, Brahman? Ajatasatru said, We give a thousand cows for that speech of yours, for verily all people run away, saying Janaka, the king of Mithila, is our patron.

Ajatrasatru said to him, No, no, do not speak to me on this.

Janaka Vaideha, the King of Vaidehas, sacrificed with a sacrifice at which many presents were offered to the priests of the Aswamedha.

brahmanas of the kurus and the panchalas had come thither and janaka vaideha wished to know which of those brahmanas was the best read so he enclosed a thousand cows and ten padas of gold were fastened to each pair of horns and janaka spoke to them Ye venerable brahmanas, he who among you is the wisest, let him drive away these cows.
