James Smithson

It's actually a system of museums known as the Smithsonian Institution.

That takes us back to James Smithson, and he was honored after his gift with the naming of a museum that's turned into an entire network of museums.

That really takes us back to the year 1846, but you fast-forward now in history, and it's about 180 years.

You go fast-forward in history, and this is what we're looking at.

How does that happen? It's kind of an Oddball, if you want to think about it.

So Smithson, his name is James Smithson, originally left this money in his estate in the early 19th century to create this museum, which became all the Smithsonian's, to expand knowledge.

So over the course of time, then it became these various museums.

It has a semi-independent but not completely independent existence.

And I was like, well, some people weren't watching yesterday, so I tried to do like weekly facts, but apparently I have to do daily facts.

The founder of the Smithsonian Institution, James Smithson, never visited the United States during his lifetime.

Got one of the biggest museums in the world, never been there.

He was British.

My point was he, he lived in Washington, D.C. area, and so we went to the Smithsonian often.

Uh, in 1846, Congress signed into law the founding of the Smithsonian Institution, which was funded entirely by the estate of James Smithson, an English scientist who had never once set foot in America and had no known correspondence with anyone here.

His fortune built what's now the world's largest museum and research complex.

That's amazing.
