Twelve were police and firefighters.

One officer, James Ramp, a 52-year-old veteran, was fatally wounded.

Palmer recalled the scene.

Oh, Sergeant Rampton was standing on Pearl Street by a pole on the side of the house.

And it's amazing that this group has been running loose now for a half a dozen, couple, three, four years that I know of.

And they should have been in prison many, many months ago for their defiance of the rules of civilized people and of our country and our land and city.

In December 1979, nine MOVE members went on trial for the death of Officer James Ramp, along with charges of aggravated assault and conspiracy.

MOVE argued that Officer Ramp hadn't been killed by anyone inside their house, but by his fellow officers, either on purpose or by accident.
