James Hurley

For today, I'm joined with Colin from Blue Rose Brighton, who you might remember from my Fireman episode from last year.

We're here to talk about Malcolm Sloan, his role in sabotaging Geoffrey Marsh, his relationship to Evelyn Marsh, how he meets James Hurley, and put more thought into it than Harley Payton, probably.

But before I go too much further, I have the mic so he can introduce himself further.

Hello, I'm Colin Newman.

And what's he got like eight to 10 minutes of screen time, something like that.

If that, it wasn't too agonizing, but he says and does some pretty weird stuff, right?

Well, I think that's the other ones that like we don't see him on screen that much compared to James Hurley or Evelyn Marsh.

You know, when we see him, he's the driver for Jeffrey Marsh and he secretly, quote unquote, swears revenge for his abuse on Evelyn.

And this could just be a late kind of 80s, early 90s sort of thing and just vibe.

But like James Hurley or like a – He's got the bike and he's got the leather jacket.

Yeah.

Yeah, greaser.

Yeah, very, very Hurley-esque.

Well, and that goes back to another thing that Lynch had an obsession with, which was the 1950s.

James Hurley is a greaser because David Lynch was obsessed with an aesthetic from the 50s.

Like, that was kind of his vibe.

David Lynch really gravitated towards that archetype.

We can see it with James Hurley.

They're just about that archetype of the loner and outcast that it seemed like it really gravitated towards with David Lynch early on.

So with all that in mind, What do you think of Wally Brando and have your thoughts changed from the filming of The Return to watching The Return or even years later?

Yeah, I'd be interested to that.

You said David Lynch is not ironic.

I'd be interested to hear your opinion on that a little bit more, but just on a stylistic sense of like, that's an interesting statement because I don't know if it's irony, but you brought up James Hurley as well.

And my relationship to it and my perspective of it, it's mine alone and nobody else's.

A little, okay.

So as Malcolm and Evelyn speak to the police about James Hurley, they point the finger at him for the murder of Jeffrey.

Donna and James arrive at Wally's hideout, with the latter insisting upon his innocence.

Donna suggests they stay on the move to avoid the police, though James believes Evelyn will help them.

Donna calls Ed for advice.

Bobby and Shelly speak to Truman and Cooper about the attack by Leo the previous night.

Dr. Jacoby had believed that exposure to the public would help him return to normal, but finds that it does not.

Jerry tells Audrey they should be able to take advantage of Ben's situation for business purposes, and Audrey requests that Jacoby bring her father back.

Audrey tells Charlie she doesn't feel like herself and cannot leave the house.

And then James performs at the roadhouse, his original, just you and I, while Renee is brought to tears watching.

And that's it.

Oh, Sonny Jim plays on his new gym set.

What a beautiful gift.

So cute.
