On top of that, the Suffolk County police chief who oversaw the early years of the Gilgo Beach investigation, a man named James Burke, was later convicted on federal charges for beating a handcuffed suspect and orchestrating a cover-up.

And he was wildly criticized for cutting off cooperation with the FBI during the exact years the case needed it most.

Whether that was corruption, complete incompetence, or something else entirely, it's one more layer of just darkness sitting directly on top of an already clearly dark stretch of land.
