And they point out that less than 1% of eligible patients are going this route, suggesting that there's a higher amount of medical management with the new GLP-1 drugs.

Another article from JAMA Surgery showed that between 2022 and 2024, bariatric surgery fell 34%.

At the same time, GLP-1 directed drugs rose 140%.

So again, these shifts are on.

As is usually the case, civilian trauma centers then began adopting whole blood, and the initial observational data were fairly impressive.

A 2023 TQIP analysis published in JAMA Surgery looked at almost 3,000 patients presenting with severe hemorrhage and found that whole blood as part of a massive transfusion was associated with an approximately 37% reduction in 24-hour mortality.

and a 47% reduction in 30-day mortality.

Another prospective multicenter study involving more than 1,600 patients across 14 trauma centers found almost a 50% reduction in the odds of death among patients receiving cold-stored whole blood.

Well, this was a fascinating study that just came out.

I don't know how many people saw it in JAMA Surgery that looked at nursing home patients.

Again, frail, typically frail patients because I set that stage previously saying that just simply being in a nursing home has been shown to be a strong marker of frailty or a strong marker of significantly increased risk.

And interestingly enough, they showed that 30-day mortality was highest or higher in those undergoing lumpectomy versus mastectomy.

Okay.

Well, there's a new article in the July 29th JAMA Surgery Journal called Laparoscopic Deskilling, The Hidden Risk of Robotic Dominance.

And I've been pointing out over the last few years, new literature that comes out that's in this sort of genre that talks about some of the unforeseen or untold costs of increasing adoption of the robot, both financial and otherwise.

And this article builds on what's been happening with the observation that robotic adoption mostly cannibalizes laparoscopic procedures rather than open procedures, which is the promise that we'll do no more open cases.

People who walk their dogs regularly get more exercise than people without pets.

A study published in JAMA Surgery highlighted a downside of this otherwise pleasant activity, however.

Dog ownership has increased in the US over the last decade, but so have broken bones among older people out walking their dogs.

Such fractures doubled between 2004 and 2017, with the majority of broken bones in women.

It doesn't look that, that worrisome.

There was a study that was published in JAMA Surgery that was called the Venturella report.

That's V-E-N-T-U-R-E-L-L-A.

Okay? So the Venturella report said that we're gonna check, quote unquote, "ovarian age," that was things like FSH, uh, anti-Mullerian hormone, uh, uh, antral, uh, follicular count, and look at ovarian reserve out to five years, uh, and they, they found no difference in those who had salpingectomy performed.

Now we're gonna get to the part that isn't funny, because the injury numbers are getting ugly.

A 2024 study in JAMA Surgery, J-A-M-A, Journal of the American Medical Association, estimated that 45,586 e-bike injuries in the United States occurred between 2017 and 2022.

Estimated annual injuries increased from about 750 in 2017 to more than 23,000 in 2022.

Hospitalizations increased more than 40 times over the same period.

San Diego County recorded 865 emergency department-treated e-bike injuries in 2024.

Over half of them, 437, involved kids between 10 and 19 years old.

As an additional note, these numbers from JAMA Surgery explicitly exclude mopeds, motorbikes, s- electric scooters, and mini bikes.

So those alarming numbers are actually about e-bicycles rather than these higher-powered electric motorcycles that I'm calling out.
