So that's also a tough piece to manage, particularly with police, I think.

Jake, thoughts? I'm going to lean on the industry again, right? Because I don't have the, I guess, the government side.

So on the trucking side of the industry, you got, and I'm just going to say a tandem axle day cab, right? And this is something that Scott was asking right before we got on this.

I've got a fleet that runs... a full route you know they're they're eight hours on the road they're putting a lot more miles on their on their asset and then i've got inner city fleet in that case same asset type different utilization if i'm going to run that on the road and and maybe i put 400 000 over the road The warranty just ended.

Maybe I bring that in closer to the shop so I don't have over the road costs when it breaks down and stuff like that.

So I'm going to run the rest of its life inner city.

If it was an undercover vehicle, I would be for it, but repurposing a marked vehicle, I would not be.

other day um now jerome you're playing nick and others and jake you are the music director so i just love that the the three deans are you know all have like different responsibilities um jake what is it like for you i know this is not uh your first uh foray in the music direction you know i've seen a couple of productions you've done what what has been like working uh as music director for come from away and and to to be out there with your colleagues

Well, this is a show not like any other that I've ever worked on, and for a number of reasons.

What really is so wonderful about this particular cast is that the nature of the work brings everyone together in a unique way.

So working with the creative team, the cast, the killer band that Julie is a part of, it's just really rewarding.

I mean, the show itself is centered around September 11th.

but it really does tell the story of September 12th and on.

So how you respond to hard times and how people get together and how township is formed and community is formed.

If you are alive doing 9-11, you need to see this because it gives you a different perspective on that day.

So the title of my message, if you're taking notes tonight, is Why Are You Here? Turn to your neighbor and say, why are you here? Maybe you got invited on campus.

What's the premise of the movie?

It's about a former kid who was a little tennis prodigy.

My character, his dad, played by Ed Harris, wanted me to be the best.

Awesome.

When I was 17, I faced a young Andy Roddick, and he beat me, kind of fell off.

My father runs a tennis club.

Oh, wow.

To be honest, I'm still a beginner, but I'm a better beginner now than I was.

Had to be said.

Had to be said.

So I'm sitting there.

Matt calls me out.

I look around.

There's a bunch of guys near me and they've all gone through puberty.

Right.

I guess that was the first question.

Um, well honestly, it, it's, the way it's lining up is a little bit much, but really what happened for me was we had the pandemic and the strike, and then I had taken time where I directed a movie, Self-Reliance, where I was...

I p- really produced it and wrote it.

And so there was a long chunk of time where I wasn't saying yes to acting roles.

I was more doing other stuff, and in that period, I realized how much I missed just acting.

And the truth is, if you're just acting and stuff, I'm like, "Yes, I'm producing," but I'm not day-to-day the way if you're really running a production.

So I'll work on something for such a short period of time [laughs] and then when it comes out it seems like I've d- it seems like I'm the craziest workaholic in the world.

Mm.

a little bit of overconfidence and bluster where I think he kind of felt like, I got everything.

I'm your best option, baby.

So like, you know, I'm getting pushed in directions.

I know what's going to happen.

I could see the future with you.

You're going to get mad at me, but you have no reason to.

So I want to know, is he aware that you were able to get him in there? And how's the fighting going? Yeah.

Yeah,

he'll score points in the twilight of his career.

I mean, although I have seen videos of him at training camp, and he looks pretty good still.

Yeah, it is a weird thing.

Yeah, I mean, it's, at least it's different from my life view, so that's why I asked where you said, like, that museum sounded interesting, and I think for me, precision is the exact details of things being right.

Uh, I love the when things fall off the rails.

"But I have to be with them." It's like being on the ship with Joseph, [laughs] where it's being Joseph, uh, D'Amboise, you know, right-hand man and being like, "Okay, my man.

... mutant kind of fight again, playing out on this big, like, political stage.

And so I think to Rosie's point, yeah, Mystique is gonna take Val's place and steer, uh, X Factor in her own direction and use them as, like, a legitimate government tool, but, like, to, like, shape, reshape the narrative.

Um, and I think, you know, like the Friends of Humanity and, like, the, the huge anti-mutant sentiment, we got kind of some echoes of that in season one with, you know, Charles being gone and Magneto trying to, like, prove himself to, like, the world on a grand stage.

And this season, [smacks lips] that obviously took a backseat 'cause we were more focused on Apocalypse and everything.

So I think-

Ian, starting with you.

I give it a solid, like, B+, because I think what we got was really good, especially, like, again, all the action set pieces that we've been talking about are really fantastic.

How can you possibly focus for a 200 straight?

Well, it was a two-day event.

So it's split into two days.

You shoot 100 targets each day.

And I think one of my biggest moments of focus was definitely in the first round.

If you can just clean the first, you can shoot 25 in the first round, because that that's your starting block you have to start good and if you and you don't start good i mean it's just it's rough to keep it going because at the national level you you had to shoot perfect so the first first round had to be perfect and after that it's just like well, don't go too hard into focus mode and don't come too much out of it, kind of find your groove.

And since it was split into two days, it was like, well, the first day I shot 100, so I was like, well, Let's get a good night's rest.

All right, we'll continue.

Yeah

... would then do is go over the top.

She was like, "Just so we never miss a fucking meal in this fucking house," we had a basement fridge that we had to make nine months' worth.

We'd be, my brother and I are sitting there making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches like workers in a factory, and then every morning you'd get, and she'll go, "Oh, did you grab your fucking lunch so that-"

But I go, "I have a condition where I can't eat scallops."

So I'm just not allowed to.

So my buddy who got into the program, we were having big talks about this, and I was being really cunty about my dad, then being like, "Well, yeah." And then finally he goes, "So take away the word disease and view it like, just call it an allergy." And I went, "By the way, all my little bitchiness for no reason, I think it's so wonderful you're in the program, and so is everybody.

You have an allergy, and that allergy makes you lose control when you have a sip, and you drink too much, you fuck your life up.

He's trying to get, you know, ac- accepted by Miguel really, and I think he, he finds heartbreak, you know, uh, meeting Miguel without, with- without giving too much away, so...

Yeah, I think Miguel is running the whole new spider community, and I think Peter likes the community.

I think he wishes, um, Miguel was more like the other spider people and had more of a sense of humor about him, was a little bit lighter.

Mm.

And was a little bit more open, but that's not who Miguel is.

But I think Peter also, and I think they all see that, like, he's trying to help.

So if you're trying to help the cause, you're on the team.

But Miguel's doing it differently.

[laughs]

And it finished, and I was like, "Well..." And then I didn't hear anything, and I was with my friend Charlene Yi and Nick Jasenovic, and we were driving over.

We had some meeting.

And I was like [laughs] it was one of those humiliated Hollywood moments where I go like, meeting ended, and everyone kinda got quiet, and I'm like, "Well, are we doing dinner or drinks?"

Ah, okay

... that the students wrote, and my buddy Bill said he was directing it.

He was like, "I could get you in." And he goes, "My uncle Timmy was an alcoholic, and every year on my birthday, he called and told me the same joke." And he goes, "Just do the Timmy joke and your voice."

Yeah.

Um, the, the point I was actually trying to make is we did voices together, we did bits together at a very young age.

Uh, we had characters where, uh, he was, uh, I was Herbert and he was Willis, and we would narrate our childhood house as these two characters, who were probably influenced by Revenge of the Nerds.

And it would be everything that would happen, it would be like, "Oh, mother's cooking supper." My mother, who you talked to briefly, I just moved out here, is a v- one of my favorite people on planet Earth.

R- reminds me of the grandmother I saw from you, some of your family in Cleveland, where she's a little bit of the old world.

Mm-hmm.

But he's running.

He looks like he's the fucking boss.

What's the premise of the movie?

it's about a former kid who was a little tennis prodigy my character his dad played by ed harris wanted me to be the best when i was 17 i faced a young and erotic and he beat me uh kind of fell off my father runs a tennis club courts are coming up they want more of the space Ed Harris hates that and wants to take him down, so he sets up a duel for a tennis match, and the winner of that gets the courts.

And my character wants to represent the tennis, but I get hurt.

And so I start playing pickleball to recover in order to be able to play tennis, and I meet Mary Steenburgen's character, who's a pickleballer.

To be honest, I'm still a beginner, but I'm a better beginner now than I was.

and i i had had none i didn't know much about the game i'd heard about it but when i first heard about this project sean the writer is an old friend he told me about it was so funny his story is similar to dusty's arc that really happened to him he was playing in beverly hills with some older women and they were talking a lot of trash to him and then they all became friends and would invite him out to coffee and he would go But then he was like, I think I'm becoming friends with them and I really like them.

And this is all getting so strange.

And so I got into pickleball in order to do the movie because I loved the idea of the movie so much.

Why is sports such a good backdrop, Jake?

Uh, well, I think it helps a lot with story structure.

I think it's really easy to structure a story and have a third act that matters.

A lot of times with movies, your third act falls apart a little bit.

It's hard to keep that drive going, especially on a comedy, at minute 70.

But the beauty of a sports movie is you mostly have the big match, and the big match mostly matters.

And so as long as you can fill the jokes throughout, it gives you a real...

You know, how different was it from page to screen, I guess?

[laughs]

Uh, uh, you're really good in it, man.

Um, I've had a bunch of people have talked about... 'Cause we were talking for a while of, do we go, it was written for Andy Roddick, and we go, "Do we go Andy Roddick?" And then we're like, "Or do we cheat and go, like, a Will Arnett type, and get, like, a comedi-" And that was the big battle with Sean, Josh, and I forever.

And then we did the meeting with you and read, and we were like, "I think Andy's gonna bring it." But the big gamble for the movie is we're like, "If Roddick's not funny, we're dead."

[laughs]

And I'm now my dad's assistant at his tennis club, and I've got Aaron Chen as my little sidekick who blows me up, and I'm just a rat, a little piece of crap.

And there's a big tennis tournament at the club because pickleballers wanna come and bring more pickleball courts, and I think I should represent the club, but my dad's embarrassed by my behavior.

And so I get hurt, and the way to get back to playing tennis, to win the tournament.

Mm-hmm.

I start playing with these older women.

And then he's like, "Then there becomes a friendship that gets a little bit more than a friendship." And I was kind of going like, "Yeah." And then he pitched a scene where my character makes a move on her and she passes, and I thought she was gonna pass 'cause of the age difference.

And when he said, and I go, "Why is she passing?" She, he goes, "Uh, 'cause she's not sexually interested in you." I was like, "Oh, that's not something I've heard where-" [laughs]

That's fun though

... did a schwing in school.

Um, what was that experience, the moment you knew it really hit, hit? What was the dyn- the real dynamic with you and Mike? Like, there was all this stuff of like they're so great together, then they weren't.

I was like, all that stuff I've always tried to find-

Neither could I. I'd be sad with

less.

And I'm glad you said that because that's the other part.

I feel exactly the same.

But one thing I want to say about sports, because that's exactly the same.

So I grew up playing sports.

Everything was about the team.

If I left my family, they would be shattered.

[laughs]

And then playing against somebody who's never played, and the guy, young guy being like... 'Cause this, the whole premise of the movie is a guy who's an old tennis pro.

Ed Harris was my coach.

Uh, I get hurt, uh, but I wanna play tennis again to win the, uh, uh, tennis club thing for my dad or whatever.

And the doctor, Ben Stiller, says, like, the fastest way back is to be playing, but without as much, you know, impact, so you could play pickleball.

Yeah

... was vetting all the people.

Then at that point she goes, "There's a lot of people from this community willing to donate kidneys." She goes, "But what I'm finding out in doing the research is that it takes some money for them to like, live during this procedure." So she was like, "I might create a foundation." I was like, "Do it.

And

I liked that.

And I liked the idea before take really trying to shut off my brain and really stepping into it.

Now I can't always pull it off, but when it happens for just a moment, it feels worth it.

So much of it, I don't care about, but that is, you know, if it, if we're chasing a drug, that's the high.

Wow.

And sometimes you get it.

Oh, about the money.

[laughs] I hope you've stopped listening, Apple.

[laughs] But I was like...

And then David Rosen was like, he's like, "Hey, what's going on?" And I go, "Yeah, J- I'm, I'm all in.

I'm a yes to p- I'm a yes to the show.

Um, but I just let you know I am trying." They, they said that they're, like, separate divisions and they don't do it and they're gonna try their hardest.

I'm like, it...

I- isn't it under the same...

Really?

Yeah

... we were at the hotel, we saw each other, and he's like, "Hey, brother, how are you?" So nice, and he goes, "You know, my lovely wife is leaving at 3:00." And he's like, "What room are you in?" And I was like, "408, man." He's like, "You're off until Monday like me?" I was like, "Yeah." He's like, "I'll h- maybe we'll get dinner." A minute after 3:00 when his wife left, there was a bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.

Yes.

I try to push back, and then I'm like, "Okay.

Can I get a hot dog with fries?" And she's like, "Yeah, I'm gonna put that hot dog in my butt and you're gonna eat it." And I was like- [laughs] ...

"What in God is happening?" I pay and I leave.

I get home, I go to my dad, and I was like, "Hey, Krog, that was crazy." And he goes, "It's the Wiener's Circle, you idiot.

[laughs] That's what you're paying for." And I was like, "Oh, right." [laughs] It was the most absurd 10 minutes of my en- I was, I was looking around.

We need him for everything.

Well, no, I, you know what I honestly think it is.

I'm not.

So I appreciate that compliment, but I don't think it's to put another shade on it.

There are certain people that woman from obsession, if she wants it.

She's about to have a five-year run where she can do whatever she wants.

When New Girl first started, I was in that, Safety Not Guaranteed, Drinking Buddies.

But we get a lot of interesting answers because it's what's the movie that kind of like built you.
