Jacobean architecture

Part of this venerable building dates back to the time of the first crusade, when Hugo de Capus built a fortalice in the centre of the estate, which had been granted to him by the Red King.

This was destroyed by fire in 1543, and some of its smoke-blackened corner stones were used when, in Jacobean times, a brick country house rose upon the ruins of the feudal castle.

The Manor House, with its many gables and its small diamond-paned windows, was still much as the builder had left it in the early seventeenth century.

Of the double moats which had guarded its more warlike predecessor, the outer had been allowed to dry up, and served the humble function of a kitchen garden.

Just beyond were two ancient stone pillars, weather-stained and lichen-blotched, bearing upon their summits a shapeless something which had once been the rampant lion of Capus of Birlstone.

A short walk along the winding drive, with such sward and oaks around it as one only sees in rural England.

Then a sudden turn, and the long, low, Jacobean house of dingy, leather-colored brick lay before us, with an old-fashioned garden of cut yews on each side of it.

As we approached it, there was the wooden drawbridge and the beautiful broad moat as still and luminous as quicksilver in the cold winter sunshine.

Yeah, I think it's going to happen next week from all of the rumblings.

One little tidbit we got throughout the week is the planning of Pip and Stella's wedding next to the Jacobean fireplace in Lower Loxley.
