Jack Velling

So congratulations to those guys.

Nick Muse and Jack Velling.

I didn't know anything about Jack Velling when they signed him.

I didn't really bother to learn anything because I was like, oh, this is just some guy.

To his credit, him and Nick Mews were like solid blocking tight ends for this Falcons team.

But yeah, what do you think about this practice squad, Aaron? I think a lot of chalk here, but congratulations to a lot of these guys.

Yeah, several guys, as you mentioned, that I thought would make the roster that are on the practice squad, like Goodson and Muse and some of those guys.

You know, it's just interesting two years in a row with Jack Velling almost making the roster because there was a point where I think it came out that they were cutting Nick Muse before it came out that they were cutting Jack Velling.

Um, So maybe I have a different opinion of him than a lot of fans, but I'm sure the Falcons would have liked to have him just as one of those developmental guys who is more of a route runner, is one of the more athletic kind of pass-catching types.

But I think they're also going to like the two that they've got in Jack Velling and Nick Muse on their practice squad who they got back.

So that's going to do it for today's episode of Joe Patrick on football.

So today was the day when teams can start establishing their 16-man practice squad spots, and the Falcons filled 15 of those spots with players that the Falcons just cut yesterday.

Those include running backs Tyler Goodson and Cash Jones, wide receivers Vinny Anthony, Dylan Drummond, and Juice Wells, tight ends Nick Muse and Jack Velling, Offensive tackle Riley Maulman, guard Cam Dewberry, center James Brockermeyer, defensive tackle Carlos Allen, edge rusher Cam Sample, linebacker Josh Woods, and cornerbacks Kobe Bryant and Darnay Holmes.

So when we look at that 15-player list, No real surprises there.

You know, guys like Woods and Holmes and Mews and Goodson were all guys that I thought were going to make the Falcons 53 man roster when we got to final cuts.

We'll see how that goes for Kobe Bryant.

Happy to see Carlos Allen make it.

Of all these undrafted free agents, him and Jack Velling were probably the two guys that, to me, put the best film out this summer in the preseason games consistently.

uh you know velling as both a pass catcher and blocker and carlos allen being a very disruptive presence so those are the two guys that at least for me watching the film i'm like that guy's got something let's see if we can develop that on the practice squad for the next year so obviously the practice squad will be you know a revolving door of players between now and the start of the regular season and throughout the season so not everybody is guaranteed that's currently on the practice squad are going to be here when we get to January and the end of the season.

These are all the waves, I should say.

Wide receiver Dylan Drummond, wide receiver Keenan Marion, wide receiver Drews Juice Wells, tight end Josh Simon and Jack Velling, offensive lineman James Brockenmeyer, Cam Dewberry, Riley Maulman, and Wanya Morris, guards Jaden Roberts and Andrew Stuber.

Defensive lineman Carlos Allen, Devontae Maxwell, edge rusher Braylon Trice, linebacker De'Varon Rainer, cornerback Kobe Bryant, and A.J. Woods, and safety Keydron Smith.

The players that were released were Tyler Goodson, running back, tight end Nick Muse, offensive lineman, I mentioned Wanya Morris, he should go in the release category.

Well, I think that the tight end room was so good, I thought, in the preseason.

Jack Velling, the rookie, don't be surprised if he doesn't show up here in the next 24 hours, 48 hours on a Falcon practice roster.

I thought he did some really good stuff.

He did.

And, um, I did not even have m- Nick Muse on my, um, uh, practice squad.

I had Jack Velling and Josh Simon on the practice squad.

But I'm gonna have to revise that because the thing we talked about earlier this week with that three-way competition between Nick Muse and Velling and, and Simon was if any of these guys in this final preseason game get some work with the starters.

And the fact that Nick Muse was out there on the opening drive to me was very indicative of what the Falcons plan.

Those are g- all guys that I think are going to be relatively safe when it comes to final cuts.

Maybe we'll get a surprise or two on that note.

But the fact that Nick Muse was in the game, he was on that play as a lead blocker, uh, on that Brian Robinson touchdown, I think is, uh, compelling evidence that we will wind up keeping four tight ends with Nick Muse being that fourth tight end, and then probably Jack Velling, um, you know, taking priority over Josh Simon.

I don't, I don't recall seeing Josh Simon in this game.
