K
74:33Kevin KnightHOST
So congratulations to those guys.
K
74:35Kevin KnightHOST
Nick Muse and Jack Velling.
K
74:38Kevin KnightHOST
I didn't know anything about Jack Velling when they signed him.
K
74:41Kevin KnightHOST
I didn't really bother to learn anything because I was like, oh, this is just some guy.
K
74:44Kevin KnightHOST
To his credit, him and Nick Mews were like solid blocking tight ends for this Falcons team.
K
76:03Kevin KnightHOST
But yeah, what do you think about this practice squad, Aaron? I think a lot of chalk here, but congratulations to a lot of these guys.
A
76:10Aaron FreemanGUEST
Yeah, several guys, as you mentioned, that I thought would make the roster that are on the practice squad, like Goodson and Muse and some of those guys.
A
76:17Aaron FreemanGUEST
You know, it's just interesting two years in a row with Jack Velling almost making the roster because there was a point where I think it came out that they were cutting Nick Muse before it came out that they were cutting Jack Velling.
Ian Cunningham explains Falcons 53-man roster, but not who will be QB1
J
21:00Joe PatrickHOST
Um, So maybe I have a different opinion of him than a lot of fans, but I'm sure the Falcons would have liked to have him just as one of those developmental guys who is more of a route runner, is one of the more athletic kind of pass-catching types.
J
21:15Joe PatrickHOST
But I think they're also going to like the two that they've got in Jack Velling and Nick Muse on their practice squad who they got back.
J
21:20Joe PatrickHOST
So that's going to do it for today's episode of Joe Patrick on football.

SHOCKER: Atlanta Falcons DITCH Zach Harrison for 3 Fresh-Faced Waiver Claims | Roster Reaction
A
20:42Aaron FreemanHOST
So today was the day when teams can start establishing their 16-man practice squad spots, and the Falcons filled 15 of those spots with players that the Falcons just cut yesterday.
A
20:53Aaron FreemanHOST
Those include running backs Tyler Goodson and Cash Jones, wide receivers Vinny Anthony, Dylan Drummond, and Juice Wells, tight ends Nick Muse and Jack Velling, Offensive tackle Riley Maulman, guard Cam Dewberry, center James Brockermeyer, defensive tackle Carlos Allen, edge rusher Cam Sample, linebacker Josh Woods, and cornerbacks Kobe Bryant and Darnay Holmes.
A
21:14Aaron FreemanHOST
So when we look at that 15-player list, No real surprises there.
A
21:18Aaron FreemanHOST
You know, guys like Woods and Holmes and Mews and Goodson were all guys that I thought were going to make the Falcons 53 man roster when we got to final cuts.
8 MINS LATER
A
29:30Aaron FreemanHOST
We'll see how that goes for Kobe Bryant.
A
29:33Aaron FreemanHOST
Happy to see Carlos Allen make it.
A
29:35Aaron FreemanHOST
Of all these undrafted free agents, him and Jack Velling were probably the two guys that, to me, put the best film out this summer in the preseason games consistently.
A
29:47Aaron FreemanHOST
uh you know velling as both a pass catcher and blocker and carlos allen being a very disruptive presence so those are the two guys that at least for me watching the film i'm like that guy's got something let's see if we can develop that on the practice squad for the next year so obviously the practice squad will be you know a revolving door of players between now and the start of the regular season and throughout the season so not everybody is guaranteed that's currently on the practice squad are going to be here when we get to January and the end of the season.
Falcons reveal their initial roster: Tuesday Takes with Tre'Shon
K
28:11Kevin KnightHOST
Um, and like was honestly one of their best graded guys on PFF throughout the preseason.
K
28:16Kevin KnightHOST
Um, Jack Velling too, honestly was doing really well.
K
28:19Kevin KnightHOST
Um, so they're, they're working on both.
K
28:20Kevin KnightHOST
Both guys are good blockers who showed that they could catch a couple of passes if you need them to too.

16:25DJ ShockleyHOST
So I'm excited to have some of these guys back, like Akash Jones, who played really well in the preseason.
D
16:30DJ ShockleyHOST
We saw Jack Velling.
D
16:31DJ ShockleyHOST
We talked about the tight ends last week, about how good they were.
D
16:35DJ ShockleyHOST
They were really good on special teams.
D
18:15Dave ArcherHOST
You got guys that starred out.
D
18:16Dave ArcherHOST
You guys talked about some of the guys that really lit it up in the preseason, whether it's Tyler Goodson or Darnay Holmes.
D
18:23Dave ArcherHOST
I thought the two tight ends, you could make a case for Nick Muse and Jack Velling being an opportunity to go someplace else.
D
18:32Dave ArcherHOST
Even a guy like Cam Dewberry, who I thought did an outstanding job in that backup guard position, he showed the ability as a young player to be somebody you could develop and move on.
Ian Cunningham makes a BOLD Move by Cutting Zach Harrison
C
7:03Corey BurtonHOST
So he's somebody that could be elevated and moved back and forth throughout the season.
C
7:09Corey BurtonHOST
Jack Velling is a tight end that I'm really excited about for the future.
C
7:13Corey BurtonHOST
I think he can do a lot of good things.
C
7:14Corey BurtonHOST
He could use a good year of development there too.
TRADE: Atlanta Falcons BET BIG on Gervon Dexter to Build Jeff Ulbrich's IDEAL Front! + Roster Cuts
A
21:59Aaron FreemanHOST
These are all the waves, I should say.
A
22:01Aaron FreemanHOST
Wide receiver Dylan Drummond, wide receiver Keenan Marion, wide receiver Drews Juice Wells, tight end Josh Simon and Jack Velling, offensive lineman James Brockenmeyer, Cam Dewberry, Riley Maulman, and Wanya Morris, guards Jaden Roberts and Andrew Stuber.
A
22:16Aaron FreemanHOST
Defensive lineman Carlos Allen, Devontae Maxwell, edge rusher Braylon Trice, linebacker De'Varon Rainer, cornerback Kobe Bryant, and A.J. Woods, and safety Keydron Smith.
A
22:28Aaron FreemanHOST
The players that were released were Tyler Goodson, running back, tight end Nick Muse, offensive lineman, I mentioned Wanya Morris, he should go in the release category.
Full breakdown of Atlanta Falcons' initial 53-man roster | Podcast
D
8:34Dave ArcherHOST
Well, I think that the tight end room was so good, I thought, in the preseason.
D
8:40Dave ArcherHOST
Jack Velling, the rookie, don't be surprised if he doesn't show up here in the next 24 hours, 48 hours on a Falcon practice roster.
D
8:47Dave ArcherHOST
I thought he did some really good stuff.
D
8:48Dave ArcherHOST
He did.
Instant Reaction: Atlanta Falcons announce 53-man roster
J
9:40Joe PatrickHOST
Ultimately, they didn't decide to keep any of the three tight ends.
J
9:43Joe PatrickHOST
Jack Velling and Josh Simon were the other ones.
J
9:46Joe PatrickHOST
I would expect any three of those guys could be back on this team's practice squad, and they all kind of have different profiles.
J
9:53Joe PatrickHOST
Nick Muse is more the blocker.
J
9:54Joe PatrickHOST
That's kind of why I thought they would keep him, just because he's very functional as a blocker and special teams player like that.
J
10:00Joe PatrickHOST
Josh Simon, I think it's going to be more difficult for him to find the field and actually especially have production because he is more that receiving tight end, and it's just hard to really... cement yourself as that kind of a player at the NFL level when you're working your way up from where he is, as opposed to like a blocker, basically a grunt.
J
10:17Joe PatrickHOST
And then Jack Velling, I kind of profile is kind of somewhere in between Nick Muse and Josh Simon has a little bit of a he's kind of like the mini Austin Hooper.
J
10:24Joe PatrickHOST
And I think that they will be interested in keeping him on the practice squad and developing him.
CHECKDOWN CHARLIE: Was Tua Tagovailoa Too LIMITED vs. Dolphins To Be Atlanta Falcons QB1 in 2026?
A
21:46Aaron FreemanHOST
And, um, I did not even have m- Nick Muse on my, um, uh, practice squad.
A
21:51Aaron FreemanHOST
I had Jack Velling and Josh Simon on the practice squad.
A
21:54Aaron FreemanHOST
But I'm gonna have to revise that because the thing we talked about earlier this week with that three-way competition between Nick Muse and Velling and, and Simon was if any of these guys in this final preseason game get some work with the starters.
A
22:06Aaron FreemanHOST
And the fact that Nick Muse was out there on the opening drive to me was very indicative of what the Falcons plan.
A
22:24Aaron FreemanHOST
Those are g- all guys that I think are going to be relatively safe when it comes to final cuts.
A
22:28Aaron FreemanHOST
Maybe we'll get a surprise or two on that note.
A
22:31Aaron FreemanHOST
But the fact that Nick Muse was in the game, he was on that play as a lead blocker, uh, on that Brian Robinson touchdown, I think is, uh, compelling evidence that we will wind up keeping four tight ends with Nick Muse being that fourth tight end, and then probably Jack Velling, um, you know, taking priority over Josh Simon.
A
22:49Aaron FreemanHOST
I don't, I don't recall seeing Josh Simon in this game.
