He eventually moved west to Los Angeles and began writing songs, hoping to break into the entertainment industry.

And after a short stint in the late '50s at Specialty Records, he became Phil Spector's protege at Gold Star Studios, and scored his first big break with Needles and Pins, which he co-wrote with fellow Spector protege Jack Nitzsche, who we'll be hearing from in the next episode.

Needles and Pins by The Searchers is a rock folk soul song released in 1963.

The song's credited to American songwriters Jack Nitsche and Sonny Bono.

The Searchers heard Cliff Bennett perform the song at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, and instantly wanted it to be their next single and recorded it before Bennett could.

They recorded December 16th and 17th at the end of 1963, and it was released January 7th, 1964.
