Jack Denham

Um, all plans went together.

Um, bar Jack Denham not, not wanting me to lead, but-

[laughs]

...

As I said, he wa- he was desperately unlucky not to win the Epsom.

Um, he just ticked all the boxes.

Jack Denham, I, I gambled on him being perfectly right once again.

Uh, I backed my own ability and certainly backed Might And Power's ability.

Uh, I had a meeting with my manager, Brett Grant, at the time, and I caught up with him on the Friday afternoon at the Crown Casino, and I said, "Brett, you've gotta come and see me.

I've gotta tell you something." I said, "If I lead in the Caulfield Cup and ride Might and Power to run a record, he's unbeatable." He goes, "If you do that, Jack Denham will never give you another ride."

[laughs]

So I'm in the mounting yard, and Jack says to me, "Whatever you do, don't lead." I said, "Yeah, good as gold." But unbeknown to Jack, I'd already had this discussion with my manager that I wanted to lead.

And if I'd done that, I thought it was impossible for them to beat him at the weight.

And I'd done that.

I could imagine Jack Denham, Nick Moraitis wanting to strangle me with a, a lap to go when I'm in front.

But look, he, he, he was a machine.

I ba- I backed the horse's ability.

[clears throat] Excuse me.

And if I'd done that, I thought it was impossible for them to beat him at the weight.
