Jack Dawson

...

he used, uh, what is it, Jack Dawson from, uh, Titanic.

Uh, you're right.

Yeah.

Okay, so there, there's some event later that night, some big, like, charity auction dinner, and the friends are like, "Brittany, Tiffany, what are you wearing?" And the sisters look down at their outfits, and they're like, "I don't know.

This?" Similar to how Jack Dawson in Titanic says- Ooh ...

"I don't know.

I guess I'll wear this to dinner." Okay.

And when we get together, at one point, probably about 12 years ago, apparently, we went to a, a, a, um, he invited me to his house for dinner.

Without a doubt, I'm like Jack Dawson at the first class table in the Titanic.

[laughs]

Right.

And I was just blown away by the amount of time and energy and love they have poured into creating something wild and fun, but also really respectful to Titanic, the tragedy of And we talk a little bit about that as well.

Guys, Jack Dawson is a puppet in this show.

You need to know that.

Think Titanic vibes and go further.

What, what is...

Jack Dawson.

Dawson.

Oh.

so now that we got that first little sapphire appearance in magic lessons out of the way in the biblical and literal ones as well let's get into the two sapphires that actually become physical objects in maria's story because yes there's there are two sapphires in this novel and they're deliberately set against each other one represents illusion and the other represents truth so let's get into it now So, about page 88, you know, there's a few pages in here into the story where Maria is completely swept up in the whirlwind of romance with the John Hathorne.

And their relationship progresses almost absurdly quickly, right? Their relationship, kind of like Jack and Rose.

Yeah.

Good catch.

But there's the sapphire.

The truth is literally hanging around her neck.

a real case of actions speak louder than words right and i think that's where the symbolism of these two sapphires become even better john sapphire helped maria believe a lie but samuel sapphire makes it increasingly difficult for maria to lie to herself because maria's real struggle at this point is not figuring out whether samuel loves her she knows he does it's admitting that she loves him and later the sapphire becomes part of the way that maria chooses to represent herself to the world So when a traveling artist paints her portrait, oh my god, is this an early ancestor of Jack Dawson? We'll get there.

Hoffman gives us all of these very specific details, right? When she sits down for her portrait to be painted, Maria chooses her favorite blue dress.

Such a great way to treat an actor.

All right, our next matchup is Jack Dawson from Titanic versus Amsterdam Valen from Gangs of New York.

Ryan, what are your initial impressions on this one?

Now we have a star.

I think this movie stinks.

Titanic,

I'm going Jack Dawson.

Yeah.

What, what is...

Jack Dawson.

Dawson.

Oh.

... "You're my captain.

You're my, you're my Jack Dawson-

[laughs]

... on the Titanic."
