There was already one digital sky survey based on new technology in late 90s, early 2000s.

Around that time, Tony Tyson, who worked at Bell Labs, now he's professor of astronomy in Davis, he thought, well, this is working.

This is great.

What would be the next step? What could we do to make it even better? And that's when he started dreaming about a system like Rubin Observatories today.
