And then we keep them in this lunch bag on some ice here, just so that they don't overheat and die before we get them back to the lab.

Before we get started today, a quick correction on our tick episode.

Hat tip to Parker Hudson, infectious disease doctor and Hospital University of Pennsylvania alumnus like me, who pointed out that the International Infectious Disease Society has only recommends prophylactic antibiotics for prevention of Lyme disease for high-risk tick bites, which means that it's an Ixodes species tick, so like a deer tick, that you live in a highly endemic area and that it was attached for more than 36 hours.

Otherwise, the ID Society says just watch and wait.

Single-dosed doxycycline prophylaxis can be given for certain clearly high-risk bites, like an Ixides tick that was attached for at least 36 hours.

But otherwise, observation with counseling about symptoms is more appropriate rather than antibiotics.

Next up, let's imagine a 78-year-old nursing home resident whose urine culture was sent to the lab because the urine appeared cloudy.

So, uh, Borrelia is, uh, what Lyme disease, uh, is the pathogen, and it is spread through a tick bite.

So it's a tick-borne pathogen that we do have a vaccine for, and it's, uh, Ixodes ticks that spread Lyme Borrelia, and these are called blacklegged ticks or deer ticks.

So dogs don't pass Lyme disease onto other dogs.

The ticks carry it between them, and when dogs develop illness that have been exposed to Borrelia, they, uh, if they get sick, which they don't all get sick, they often have fever, lethargy.
