Ivy Lee

The laws haven't caught up.

And I think back to, I think it was Ivy Lee who did propaganda for the Nazis in the 30s.

And then that's where we got Farah, was the frustration of people advocating in this country for the Nazi party.

And not to overdraw the comparison between the CCP and the Nazis, but...

And he just didn't have a good image.

And after various disasters and scandals and, you know, really violent episodes, he had to hire Ivy Lee.

So this is, again, a guy that had detective experience.

You know, this guy... essentially invented a PR campaign for Rockefeller and he'd have photo shoots and he'd send them to you know shake hands with workers and things like this so it became less of a raw kind of we're going to coercively infiltrate your organizations and more of a we need the newspapers we need the media we need to you know clean up our image and we need to have a fixer sort of apparatus for when things get out of control we're going to have to have you know, on the call legal people to quickly, you know, throw this under the rug, you know, shape the image.

And what you nowadays call limited hangouts, that was kind of developed by Ivy Lee.

He would give some of the information, frame it, and then that would be kind of what's, you know, concede the easiest thing, but then hide the core strata of whatever it is.

And even put out sort of managers, you know, you know, bias and lower level people and say, you know, oh, we've cleaned that issue up.

Um, but there again, like I doubt that anyone in that chain o- of events knew that it was just a watch company trying to sell watches, you know? Um, yeah.

Was, was, was Ivy Lee a contemporary of his?

Ivy Lee actually was, uh, even before Bernays.

So he, he-

He was

Um, Standard had just, you know, signed a contract with IG Farben, which is a, a chemical company.

They were, you know, seeing petrochemicals as a huge business, and all of this, you know, unsavory business with Hitler was like cramping their, their potential profits.

And so they sent Ivy Lee over there to try to talk some sense into Hitler and Goebbels and, you know, um, all of that.

It was Farben that staffed and directed Hitler's intelligence section and ran the Nazi slave labor camps as a supplemental source of manpower for Germany's factories.

Farben even hired the New York public relations firm Ivy Lee, who was John D. Rockefeller's PR specialist, to help improve Hitler's public image in America.

Lee, incidentally, had also been used to help sell the Soviet regime to the American people in the late 1920s.

How do you keep all that stuff straight? And since the mid 90s, when I was at AOL, I've been using a system that's been around for over a century.

called the ivy lee method and when you talked about uh index cards here's my index card for today it's got one item on it be on matthew's podcast and i've got a bunch of other things that i'm doing today but every single day i use the method to make sure i'm doing focused small groups of tasks three to six no more because when you can complete those it gives you that sense of accomplishment that you don't get if you've got this big, long, legal-sized pad with hundreds of to-dos and writing in the corner and on the margins, and you're trying to make sense of it.

It can be really overwhelming.
