It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

So we have not yet gotten to the big W or whatever they're going after.

exactly exactly so uh yeah this is uh it's exciting because i've seen this movie many many many times in its entirety and in hunks and in clips so i know it pretty well and to see it through the eyes of someone who has never seen it that's sort of what the basis of this show was when we started it so this week's movie is it's a mad mad mad mad world directed by Stanley Kramer and written by British authors William and Tanya Rose.

It has Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Jonathan Winters, Phil Silvers, Don Knotts, Dorothy Provine, Dick Shawn, Terry Thomas, Edie Adams, Jimmy Durante, and just about everyone else in Hollywood.

It was released by United Artists in 1963, although there are several edits floating around that you can grab.

That makes more sense than John.

Yeah.

John Statham was actually in Mad World.

Well, that's his role.

My guess is you've heard of it.

The movie is called It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Ring a bell? And the brand new book that is out is called Comedy is a Grim Business, The Making of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Movie came out back in 1963, and most of those stars are gone now, but there was one guy who put this book together with such incredible insight that I loved every minute of it, and I hope you will too.

James Curtis is the author of that book.

And they're trying to sabotage each other in order to get to where they're going.

And that was the start of it.

And over the years that passed, actually pretty much 10 years since Genevieve, Mad World kind of took shape.

And, but they would do promo tie-ins and stuff.

Uh, Jim Backus also from Mad Mad Mad World.

Yeah.

Which was great.

and you know what i'm thinking i don't think this is a monkey movie no it's not let's see what we got here i will say this before i show it to you this is our first hicks nick stick pick that has an intermission so we'll watch this one in two parts This will actually be two episodes of the show.

And the movie chosen is It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which, if not the greatest comedy, if not the funniest comedy ever made, maybe the greatest comedy ever made.

an eccentric millionaire had people chasing after money.

And for what it's worth, it was sponsored by Glad Trash Bags.

But that was sort of inspired by Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

This movie has a tremendous following that seems to have built through the years.

Yeah, and they weren't funny either.

Well, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World was.

I think It's a Mad, Mad World was hilarious.

And it happened to have been my father's classic, one of his classics, his only big comedy that was made before my time.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world, which I'm getting ready to present again in Palm Springs at the newly restored Palm Springs Plaza Theater on November 1st.

So besides a lot of other things on my plate, I'm deep in production mode and trying to get this, you know, put together and tickets are already on sale.

So we're just like really, my mother and I are co-producing it and co-hosting and we're scrambling to, you know, to make it the big deal that it's meant to be.

And so to have, you know, kind of a definitive just telling of the story of that movie, I was so thrilled.

Well, it's so many people's favorite movie.

And I can't tell you how many people come up to both my mother and myself and say, you know, do you know what my favorite movie is? Or do you know what my dad's favorite movie is? Or my son's favorite movie? Or my daughter? Or my sister? And we always say, yes, it's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

And they say, how did you know that? And we always say, because everybody says that.
