Italian Army

Exactly.

The Italian Army is actively having to deploy bomb squads to hunt for unexploded artillery shells that are literally thawing out of the ice, which because of the unstable chemicals become highly dangerous when they reemerge into warmer temperatures.

This brings us to a theater of the First World War that often gets completely overshadowed by the mud, the trenches, and the barbed wire of the Western Front.

We are talking about the Guerra Bianca, or the White War.

What did Enzo do without his family?

In 1917, he joined the 3rd Alpine Artillery Division of the Italian Army to help with the war.

And his job was actually putting horseshoes on mules.

But then he got severely sick with the flu too.

The priest was young and blushed easily and wore a uniform like the rest of us, but with a cross in dark red velvet above the left breast pocket on his gray tunic.

The captain spoke pidgin Italian for my doubtful benefit, in order that I might understand perfectly that nothing should be lost.

Priest today with girls, the captain said, looking at the priest and at me.

The priest smiled and blushed and shook his head.

The captain spread his hand open, the thumb up and fingers outspread as when you make shadow pictures.

There was a shadow from his hand on the wall.

He spoke again in pidgin Italian.

You go away like this.
